Quarter to Nine has had its ups and downs with shows, but after almost seven years, they’re still going strong and show no signs of stopping.

Located somewhere “between Slipknot and Britney Spears,” these four guys have gone through member changes, riots and record labels-gone-bad to become the local sensation they are today.

The band started with Dustin Schulz (lead guitar) and Justus Bass (bass guitar, vocals) who knew each other through mutual friends. Several people were added into the mix, and subtracted, and the final lineup came to be the same two with Brady King (drums, vocals) and Duran (guitar).

While the boys all have different tastes in music, ranging from alternative rock like Breaking Benjamin to folk music Simon and Garfunkel to the ‘pretty stuff’ like that played by Delilah on Lite 92.5, they all share creativity in lyrics and music to form a unique sound.

“We have a rule within the band,” said Schulz. “If you don’t like someone’s idea, but don’t have a better one, you keep it to yourself.”

And it seems to be working. In January of 2005, QTN released Micless on Aberdeen Recordings. Although the label had given the band some drama within the last few months, the guys are ready and eager to get back into the studio.

QTN, who have won the past two Uncle Sam Jam Battle of the Bands contests and have performed at Lifelight for the past two years, haven’t always had good luck with shows. In fact, one of the first shows the band did was at a senior keg in Orient, SD. Their vocalist/guitarist quit minutes before the show was set to start, and the other three were left to entertain a fairly large, fairly drunk crowd.

“It was a horrible show,” says King. “Bottles were thrown onto the stage, and huge fights broke out. It was like a riot.”

But the guys (who describe themselves as “laid back,” “entertaining,” “provocative” and “scrumptious” … I’ll leave it up to you to figure out who said what) have managed to make it, and are currently recording a video for their song “Scream” (which is being done by SDSU student Brett Bittner).

Expect to see a lot more from these guys, including the music video and a possible CD out in the fall, along with more shows.
