When most people think of summer, they think of swimming pools, sleeping in and no school. When I think of summer, I think of national tours, local shows and major concerts.

This week, I’m going to let you in on some concerts in the area over the summer that should prove to be worthy of your time. Next week, I will be bringing you several national tours that I think are good investments as well.

I’ll start with Private Drive, who will be touring throughout the summer. On April 27, they have a show in Madison at Dakota State University Underground with After The Sun and Avery. On June 22, they will be at the Renner Legion Hall with I Am Miss America and After The Sun. Times and prices are yet to be announced for both shows.

Avery, a newer band out in the local scene, is going full blast this summer with shows from Sioux Falls to North Dakota to Missouri. The boys will be at the Renner Legion Hall on June 1 with All To Blame, Asking Abby and After The Sun.

They will also be at the Lava Lounge with Kill Your Ex, Abandon Kansas, Wayward and Benefit of a Doubt on July 22. Once again, times and prices are yet to be determined.

The Lava Lounge seems to be packed with shows this summer, as After The Sun will be appearing there on June 5 with Chaos and Psychostick.

Insane Clown Posse will be in South Dakota for several dates with Twiztid and X-Clan. The first will be on June 5 at the Sioux Empire Fair and the second will be on June 6 at the Rushmore Plaza in Rapid City.

The Ramkota Exhibit Hall will also be busy this summer, with one of their larger shows happening on June 10 when Chevelle, Finger Eleven and Strata play for an all-ages event.

Several other annual events this summer include Jazzfest, RibFest and the Great Bear Recreation Summer Jam.

Jazzfest is July 20-21 this year at the Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls. This free event features The Lee Boys, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and Derek Trucks Band on Friday, with Solution and Soulcrate Music gracing the second stage. The main bands include Northlanders Jazz Band, Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans, Steve Weingart and Mike Miller, Bonerama, Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Robert Cray Band with Kyle Knutson, Snakebeard Jackson, Dakota Jazz Collective, Derek Postini and Urban Blues on the second stage.

This year’s RibFest starts on Thursday, May 31, and ends Sunday, June 3. Starship starring Mickey Thomas will be opening Thursday night, The Johnny Holm Band will play Friday, Saturday will star Kansas and Kory & The Fireflies will end the festival on Sunday.

Admission for the festival is $3 before, or $4 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free, and tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 1, at the Sioux Falls Arena Box Office and Ticketmaster outlets.

On Saturday, June 23, the Great Bear Recreation Park Summer Jam will include Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Quietdrive, Snakebeard Jackson and Solution. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of.
