Golfers claim Dakota Cup win

Brian Kimmes

The SDSU men’s golf team managed to succeed where the SDSU football team failed, defeating rival North Dakota State. The Jackrabbits defeated the Bison in match play, eight-and-a-half to five-and-a-half, and retained the traveling trophy the teams vie for, the Dakota Cup.

“It’s turned out to be a pretty competitive but respectful rivalry,” Head Coach Jared Baszler said. “The guys look forward to it.”

Baszler said SDSU was better up and down the line than the Bison.

“I expected if we played like we could, we would win,” he said.

The golf team next looks to the Independent Tournament. Last year in the tournament, SDSU finished second, falling to Northern Colorado. Baszler said the tournament will consist of the same teams as last year, and he believes Northern Colorado is a little weaker than last year.

“If we play really well, we have a good chance,” Baszler said. “We’re about due for a win … I’m looking forward to having an opportunity to win a bigger tournament this week.”
