Although Sioux Falls usually boasts a good variety of rock music, it is also home to a fairly good hip-hop scene. Soulcrate has helped in reviving this ‘scene’ and brought it to a whole new level.
The group, consisting of DJ / Producer Absolute and brothers Attention Deficit (A-Def) and Dirt Dee, formed in early 2002. Although the brothers moved to South Dakota from Massachusetts when they were younger, the three of them have spent the majority of their lives in Sioux Falls. Their website, soulcratemusic.com hails the group as “the vibrant inventiveness and sense of community that defines Midwest hip hop.”
The boys were interested in music for quite sometime, but they knew that breaking in wouldn’t be easy in a small city such as Sioux Falls.
“We approached [the music scene] in a healthy way,” said A-Def. “We weren’t expecting too much and our expectations weren’t too high.”
Soulcrate’s lyrics spawn from various thoughts and feelings known to most Midwest residents.
“I write a lot about the things around me in the world that are humorous,” said A-Def. “I pay attention to things that really make you feel something.”
The boys have found a great response from local fans. The Argus Leader has named their latest album, “A Def Eisenhauer,” one of the best local albums. It’s the second-most sold album at Ernie November stores in Sioux Falls.
In September, Soulcrate will have been together for five years and plans on throwing a large party for their fans.
“I’d love to have a huge blow-out show,” said A-Def. “I really want to give back to our fans and give away a lot of free stuff.”
With a brand new year ahead, the boys hope to be spreading their music even more.
“Hopefully we’ll start working on a new album and touring more,” said A-Def.
No matter what comes for the boys next, they show no signs of quitting or giving up.
“I’ve always said that the second we stop progressing, we’ll stop making music,” says A-Def.
Soulcrate has a show this Friday, Feb. 16, at Nutty’s North in Sioux Falls with Truth and Adapt, Saturday Morning Soundtrack and Jordan Miche.
