4-H duo join forces to teach children good health habits

Most people who are not familiar with 4-H think of it as something agricultural, but 4-H is much more than that. It started out with a base in agriculture, but it has grown into a club for youth to make projects in areas ranging from electronics to sewing to building citizenship and leadership skills, and also to learning many life-long lessons.

University students may get chance to buy computers back if bill passed by state legislature

Unless the legislation becomes law, those computers will have to be sold by using state surplus property laws -meaning more red tape, and students may not get first shot at them.

South Dakota job demand to target teachers through 2014

Teachers will be in high demand in South Dakota for the next seven years, according to a study by the state Department of Labor. Elementary teachers top the list of job openings that require a bachelor’s degree. An estimated 153 new teachers will be needed annually through 2014.

Logo firm to get ‘more direction’

The Jackrabbit logo committee will meet this week to discuss the future of SDSU’s new athletic logo, a week after a copy of the latest proposed version appeared in The Collegian. “I don’t know if we will have any new designs in hand or not,” said University Relations Director Jenny Crickard, liaison between the committee and Phoenix Design Works of New York City.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! It’s a phrase we grew up shouting, and it’s no surprise that ice cream is one of the best-loved desserts in America. In fact, the average American eats about 23 liters a year. SDSU students can rest assured that they are able to indulge their cravings by simply going to the dairy sales bar, located just north of Ag Hall in the Dairy Microbiology building.

Former tribal president Fire Thunder to present lecture

Cecilia Fire Thunder, the former tribal president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in Pine Ridge, will present the Harding Distinguished Lecture February 14 at 7 p.m. in the Peterson Recital Hall of Lincoln Music Hall on the SDSU campus. Fire Thunder’s address is entitled “Re-Imagining American Indian Traditions: Lakota Women and the Tribal Decision-Making Process.

You are either in or you’re out. The concept of Victoria’s Secret model Heidi Klum’s reality series “Project Runway,” was on campus Monday night at Jack’s Place. That’s right, SDSU has its own version of “Project Runway,” courtesy of the University Program Council.

The local music scene hits hard once again this week as shows gather not only in Sioux Falls but Brookings as well. Sioux Falls native, We All Have Hooks For Hands have an upcoming show at Nutty’s North in their hometown. A culmination of several broken-up bands, We All Have Hooks For Hands reached their final line up with nine musicians: Eli Show (singer/guitar), Isaac Show (drums), Tory Stollen (drums), Tim Evenson (singer/guitar), Logan Borchardt (guitar), Tony Helland (bass), Dave Lethcoe (horn section/keyboards) Brent Hardie (horn section/keyboards) and Michael Graber (violin).
