The fundamental tenet of the American Dream is the promise that in our country, when people are willing to work hard, they are able to afford a living for themselves and their families. The present minimum wage of $5.15 per hour for a full-time worker yields an annual income of just $10,712 a year-far below what it takes for a single mother of two children to earn a living.
Newman Center theft nets electronics, games
Unknown suspects broke into and stole items from Pius XII Newman Center during the early morning of Wednesday, Feb. 21. The theft occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to the Rev. Paul Rutten, who has been at the Newman Center for three years. A PlayStation 2, Xbox, 12 games and a student’s laptop were stolen.
Some senate seats hot, others ignored
The polls open are now open on a mostly-full slate of Students’ Association Senate candidates, Feb. 28 – March 1. During the two-day stretch, students can vote either online or at on-campus polling stations, choosing the students that represent the college they attend.
Jackrabbit basketball player rises to role model status on reservation
When Mackenzie Casey was younger, he set a goal that some day he would go to college and play Division-I basketball. Now, the Jackrabbit junior guard is the perfect example of what having goals and sticking to them can achieve. Casey, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and graduate of Red Cloud High School, has become a role model for his friends and family on the Pine Ridge Reservation and across South Dakota.
SDSU forms partnership with Argonne National Laboratory
A new partnership with a national lab promises to provide new research opportunities for SDSU faculty and students, officials said at an agreement signing on campus last week. On Thursday, Feb. 22, officials from SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory signed a memorandum of understanding, forming a partnership between the two organizations.
UPD warns students of credit scam
Students notified the University Police Department Feb. 26 of on-campus solicitation. Two men employed by College Development Inc., a third-party group that sells information to banks and credit card companies, were distributing fliers both in and outside of The Union as well as underneath doors to individual rooms in residence halls all across campus.
Wrestlers may become first D-I national qualifying athletes
History can be made on the mat on March 3. In SDSU’s 125-plus years in existence, the school has never had a Division-I national qualifier in any sport. The SDSU wrestling team can change that when the team travels to the University of Northern Iowa to wrestle in the NCAA Division I West Regional Qualifier.
SDSU basketball star lives up her last night in Frost
Senior Night was Megan Vogel’s night. Vogel, SDSU’s lone senior and arguably the best player ever to put on the yellow and blue, led the team to an 86-51 victory over border-rival North Dakota State University. Before the game, Vogel was given flowers by Head Coach Aaron Johnston in a mini-ceremony.
Impressive game’ by Dordt downs the Jacks in first round
The SDSU Jackrabbit men’s hockey club was unsuccessful in retaining the Walnut Cup for a second straight year. The Jacks fell to eventual runner-up Dordt College, 8-3, in the tournament’s first round Feb. 23. “Dordt played an impressive game, probably the best I’ve ever seen them play,” said Head Coach Nate Bofenkamp.
Spring Break
Junior animal science major Micah Rupp had his spring break trip to Florida planned since the beginning of the fall semester. He was going to stay with his cousin, drive to the beach every day and have a great time with several friends. Now his friends are backing out, so he isn’t able to go to Florida.
