Give more than you get this holiday season

The Issue: Homelessness and poverty aren’t just “big city” problems; both are prevalent in South Dakota. The Stance: Poverty and homelessness can be remedied with a little time, money and effort. At any given point in the year, especially near the December holidays, you can eavesdrop on students complaining about how broke they are.

College Connoisseur Talks About Beer

At some point during my sophomore year, I realized that beer comes in cases of less than 30. In fact, some beer doesn’t have “Light” after the name. The amazing thing was some of these beers don’t taste like water. At our local Brookings Hy-Vee, between the cans of Old English and the beer cooler (i.

Faceoff: Southern Minnesota

I come from the land of sky blue waters, the Jolly Green Giant, and the world’s largest man-made ball of twine. It’s true, I am a Minnesotan. And I’m damn proud of it, don’tcha know. We gave the world spam, Target and scotch tape. It’s the home of the world famous Mayo Clinic, the Guthrie Theatre and of course, the Mall of America.

Faceoff: West River South Dakota

Okay, so I can’t say as many really good things about South Dakota as my fellow staff member can say about being from Minnesota. Holidays serve as reminder to help

Families crowding into a small trailer with no heat. Multiple families living in a bus. A man freezing to death because he does not have shelter. These are not headlines from a large and dangerous city like New York. These are the desperate situations of several individuals and families who are homeless right here in Brookings.

Trygstad to put training to test

In January 2008, Jayme Trygstad, the assistant director of environmental health and safety and a captain in the South Dakota Army National Guard, will be deployed to Afghanistan, leaving behind his family, home and job. Trygstad is tentatively scheduled to report to Fort Riley, Kan.

Letter to the Editor: Balloons are nice guesture but no lasting inpact on AIDS problem

On Wednesday, December 5 balloons were released to increase AIDS awareness. Although I support the goal of awareness immensely, I dislike the idea of causing another problem in the process. Balloons do not help AIDS victims, nor do they help to deter the spread of the disease.
