Charges dropped against second rape defendant

A prosecutor said Wednesday he has dropped charges against former South Dakota State University men’s basketball player Mohamed Berte now that another former player has been acquitted. Charges of aiding and abetting second-degree rape, sexual contact and first-degree burglary have been dismissed against Berte, 23, of the Ivory Coast, said Clyde Calhoon, Brookings County state’s attorney.

Jury acquits Gilbert of rape, burglary

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) – A Brookings jury on Thursday acquitted Andre Gilbert on charges he sexually assaulted a woman in her dormitory room at South Dakota State University. The jury deliberated about 4 1/2 hours in finding Gilbert, a former SDSU basketball player, not guilty.

The women’s basketball team has had an exciting start to the season while playing some tough opponents. On Nov. 30, the team suffered a 67-52 loss to Arkansas State, but rebounded to crush Long Beach State, 85-41 for the home crowd on Dec. 3 at Frost Arena.

Lady Jacks swim against Huskers at home

The SDSU women’s swimming and diving team was at home Saturday against the University of Nebraska, dropping a 181-102 decision to the Cornhuskers at the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center Pool. The day started with the 200 medley relay and the Jackrabbit teams fell into third and fifth place.

Men splash into second at St. John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team finished second out of four teams Saturday at the St. John’s University December Invitational. The host won the event with 827 points, followed by SDSU with 693. North Dakota finished third with 289 points with Wisconsin-River Falls fourth with 220.
