Three place at home open
The SDSU wrestling team began its season by hosting the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov. 4. The team had many wrestlers compete in the individual competition, but did not have wrestlers win their weight class. Finishing highest for the Jacks were Jason Stripling and Nick Kulseth.
Jacks push for conference title with game versus Southern Utah
The Jacks enter the final stretch of their season with a renewed focus as they are challenged with two conference games on the road. In the first game, the Jacks travel to Cedar City, Utah, to face the University of Southern Utah. The Jacks are leading the Great West Football Conference with a 2-0 record, while Southern Utah enters the game in last place of the Great West, 0-3.
Soccer captures conference title
Closing the season with a 4-0-1 record, the Jacks recovered from a terrible middle portion of the season to win the United Soccer Conference Tournament during their first year in the conference. Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer said the team felt like they played well all season long, but they just were not getting the breaks and bounces.
Lady Jacks aim for national tourney
With the season kickoff this weekend, the 2006-2007 Jackrabbits look to continue their winning ways after posting a record of 19-9 last year. This year, the Jacks have seven returning players and have added six freshmen to the lineup. “The team has more depth and is a bit stronger and more athletic than in the past,” said Head Coach Aaron Johnston.
Hockey splits season opener with Dordt
The Jacks hockey team started the year off battling rival Dordt College. The two teams split the weekend series, with Dordt besting the Jacks 6-4 on Friday night and the Jacks exacting revenge on Saturday night, winning 5-4 in overtime. Jake Gustafson led the team with two goals, while chipping in an assist.
Inconsistent play plagues Jackrabbits
As the Independent Championships approach, the Jackrabbit volleyball team had one last tune-up before the big tournament. North Dakota State traveled to Brookings to take on the Jacks in the final regular season match of the year. Three weeks ago, the Jacks ventured to Fargo and ended the Bison’s six-game winning streak.
Jacks always take precedence over pros
This is the busiest time of year for a sports fan. Most of the major viewing sports are in season. Three of the big four professional sports are going on: NFL, NBA and NHL. The main three college sports are also taking place: Football, basketball and hockey.
Jacks win season’s final home game
The Jackrabbits’ last home game ended much better than their first. The No.-24 ranked SDSU beat William Penn Nov. 4, 34-3, sending the Jacks into their longest winning streak since 1963. But it wasn’t quite the win the 6-3 Jacks had hoped for. “Looking around that locker room, there wasn’t any excitement and I praised them for that,” said Head Coach John Stiegelmeier.
Meet the Berrys
On his only weekend off during an 11-game season, quarterback Ryan Berry drove five hours to La Crosse, Wis., to cheer on the SDSU cross-country team. He couldn’t think of a better way to spend his bye week than watching his wife, Caitlin, compete. Sometimes just being a student can be hard enough, but sophomores Ryan and Caitlin Berry have taken the term “busy” to a new level.
