Women capture Independent cross country title while men finish third

Becka Mansheim won the individual title, while Katie Tornberg finished third overall to lead the SDSU women’s cross country team to the title at the Division I Independent Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind., Saturday.

The Jackrabbits won the nine-team event with 55 points, edging host school IPFW with 58 points.

Mansheim, a senior from Brookings, finished as individual champion out of 56 runners, clocking a time of 22 minutes, 05.9 seconds at Hefner Fields.

The next three scoring runners for SDSU were Krystie Ratzlaff (15th), Caitlin Berry (16th), Claire Steinke (20th) and Amanda Kuchta (21st).

Zach Frohling, a sophomore from Britton, finished fifth overall to lead the SDSU men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the Division I Independent Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind., Saturday. The Jackrabbits finished third with 106 points.

SDSU sophomore Jared Bienlien was next for the Jacks finishing 12th overall. He was followed by Bryan Kegley (28th), Ryan Egeberg (30th) and Joe Roby (31st). Rounding out the effort for SDSU was Todd Vlieger who placed 35th overall.

The Jacks men’s team will next be in action Nov.3 at the Fall Finale in Collegeville, Minn. The women return to action Nov. 3 at the Fall Finale in Collegeville, Minn.
