Letter to the Editor: Abortion

Abortion

Pro-choice is not pro-abortion. Pro-choice is about who should make the choice. We need to understand why women seek abortions before we can stop them.

Are they trying to avoid the drama of unwed pregnancy? If so, then we need to be more compassionate and less judgmental. Let them know there are wonderful people waiting to adopt.

Can they not afford another child? Use the millions of dollars in legal costs to take the abortion ban to the courts to help low-income families.

Is the woman’s health at risk or is the child severely disabled? Fund research to overcome the risks and to provide support for disabled children and their parents.

Was the pregnancy a product or rape or incest? Have compassion for the victim and understand that most rapes aren’t reported right away and many cases of incest are never reported. Forcing a young rape victim to continue a pregnancy is cruel and continues to victimize her.

We need to help solve these problems before we can expect abortion to stop, and we must realize that making abortion illegal will not stop it from happening.

Take special notice if you oppose abortion because of religious beliefs. If you are truly Christian, you should look to the Bible for terrific advice: be less judgmental and more compassionate.
