Cameras police Union entrances

Every day thousands of students and numerous staff members of SDSU walk through the doors of The Union. Unannounced to them is the fact that they are being recorded. On the walls near the main entrances sit video cameras that are recording the use of the building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SDSU has joined nearly 80 other universities in supporting an American Association of State Colleges and Universities initiative this fall. The goal is to register as many students as possible and get them out to vote come Election Day. A political move by the South Dakota Board of Regents landed them in hot water with some faculty at an SDSU Faculty Senate meeting Oct. 10. At back-to-back afternoon meetings, Jim Shekleton, the BOR’s lawyer, spoke with students then the Faculty Senate about a new required addition to every class’ syllabus.

Hobo Day committee tees up

As usual, the week of Hobo Day is jam-packed with activities, and the Hobo Day Committee has been busy planning for weeks. While a lot of work has already been done, the Hobo Day Committee still needs help. On Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Rotunda A.

A new rabbit arises

A toothy-grinned jackrabbit has been the face of SDSU athletics for more than 30 years. But some say it’s out of style, and a hunt has begun to find a more current look for the SDSU Jackrabbit. About a year ago, Rob Peterson, associate athletic director, and Derek Peterson, director of the University Bookstore, noticed that the Jackrabbit stood out from the other Division-I logos because it wasn’t as current.

Need to save money?

Junior Tasha Overmyer works two jobs. Each demands much of her time, some nights until 12 or 1 a.m., taking away from school, family and sleep. However, the bills still must be paid, but Overmyer doesn’t let it overwhelm her. “Yes, I work two jobs,” she said.

New coffeehouse in church provides gourmet coffee, money for mission trips

There are not many places in Brookings that offer a fresh cup of gourmet international coffee to be sipped next to a warm cozy fire. However, as of mid-September, one more has been added, and this coffeehouse has a mission. Stationed in the new addition of First Lutheran Church, located on the corner of Main Avenue and Eighth Street, is Mission Coffeehouse: Coffee with a Conscience.

Letter to the Editor: Admendment C wording

I was very frustrated on how The Collegian handled the issue of Amendment C last week. Yes, gay marriage is mentioned. However, there is more to it, the exact words on the ballot are, “Amendment C would amend the State Constitution to allow and recognize marriage between a man and a woman.

Letter to the Editor: Alternate health

Delighted to see the article on Alternate Health. Note that T’ai Chi Chuan (or Taijiquan) and Qi Qung are subsets of Wu Shi (as is ‘Kung Fu’ – “intentional work” and other Chinese Arts), not an alternative label. The brief description muddles the two a bit.
