In the Middle: Gay Marriage

Jeremy Fugleberg

I hate the whole blathering fuss that surrounds the gay marriage issue. Never did an issue seem so manufactured to inflame the passions of the Left and the Right without actually solving anything.

The Right continues its shocking trend of hypocrisy. Elizabeth says man-woman marriage is the source of society’s stability and gay marriage is just plain unnatural.

That’s just plain idiotic. What right does the Right have to determine that when the divorce rate between “one man and one woman” marriage is so high? Couples start up God-sanctioned unions every day and then quit when they can’t make it. That’s not stability.

But the Left must be very careful if it tries to undermine the basis for how the Right feels about homosexuality. I’m a son of a Lutheran pastor, and the last time I checked, God doesn’t think much of homosexuality – in many parts of the Bible.

Justin, don’t cite broad platitudes about “loving thy neighbor” when the Bible makes it clear you can love the sinner but hate the sin. If you want purely secular unions, fine. But don’t you dare water down the clear Biblical statements and strong reasons behind why Christians feel the way they do.

Bottom line: I don’t have a problem with anyone marrying anyone. Marriage is what you make it. If you and society are more stable if you marry someone of the same gender, you have my permission. But don’t expect to have the Bible’s permission, or anyone else’s, for that matter.
