Local family gets new house, life makeover
More than 3,000 friends and neighbors welcomed the Thibodeau family of Toronto, into their new home, Wednesday, Sept. 13, after the family was chosen to be part of the popular ABC television program “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” ABC placed an ad in a newspaper, stating the show was coming to South Dakota.
Nam vets honored, remembered
One by one they trickled home. Disheartened and battle weary, Vietnam veterans received no welcome after more than 10 years of military struggle. All that changed last weekend in Pierre. More than 30 years later, South Dakota’s Vietnam veterans received the ceremony they deserved so long ago.
Ground broken for 20-year development
Ground broke for South Dakota’s first research park Sept 18. just to the east of SDSU in Brookings. The Innovation Campus, just southeast of 22nd Avenue and the Highway 14 bypass, will eventually include 19 buildings worth over $200 million. The research park will serve as an incubator for ideas and research that spring from the university.
Beyond the Babble
There’s more to the world than the United States. Rural South Dakota isn’t what comes to mind when one talks about what changes one’s life. But I’m going in an opposite direction. I’ve learned more in four years in South Dakota than in 18 years back home in Minnesota.
Sarcastic Cynicisms
Just when you thought you could get rid of me, the fools at The Collegian hire me back on. For those very, very few of you that have been keeping track, this is my fourth year of ruffling your feathers here at SDSU. Notice, however, that I didn’t say my LAST year.
Call me Crazy
By now, some of you may have heard about the Dawson County shootings in Montreal, Canada. I would like to start by stating that nothing I am about to say is meant to take away from the pain and suffering currently being felt in that community. My heart goes out to the mourners and the injured.
In the Middle: Abortion
Abortion is none of my business. I’m the wrong gender for it to be a personal choice, and no one close to me is stuck trying to decide. But I must have an opinion. The actions of both sides compel me to take a position. Abortion is always wrong. There’s nothing nice, clean or trouble-free about it.
Abortion
In regard to last week’s article (Sept. 14, 2006) stating that the pro-life movement needs to advocate for all life, I would argue that pro-lifer’s stance on life is consistent across today’s most contentious topics. I don’t support abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, and only support just war.
Balanced
As one of the most loyal readers of The Collegian for the past six years, I want to congratulate The Collegian for starting the year off right. Nothing kicks off a school year better than suing the Regents. Keep fighting the good fight and working to make sure the students are informed about the issues.
Regents waste $5,000 on ‘SDPURC’
At issue: South Dakota Board of Regents to rename USDSU “SDPURC” after turning down marketing firm suggestions. Our view: SDPURC will eventually catch on, but $5,000 was wasted in the search for a new name. South Dakota Public Universities and Research Center.
