UPDATE: Presidential forums open to all media
The South Dakota Board Regents announced Sept. 13 that all members of the media are welcomed to attend SDSU’s presidential candidate meetings Sept. 14 on Sept. 15. “I’m happy that the Board of Regents finally came around to see what is under the law,” said Jeremy Fugleberg, The Collegian editor-in-chief.
From the Right
Alfonso Rodriguez was convicted two weeks ago for the murder of Dru Sjodin, the University of North Dakota college student who went missing in 2003. This case has now cleared the way for death penalty deliberations. Rodriguez had just completed a prison sentence for stabbing and trying to kidnap a woman and had also pleaded guilty to rape in the past.
Vandalism message and response concern out of stater
I had to reply after reading the article about the vandalism on the Catholic church, followed by Tasiyagnunpa Livermont Dubray’s response in Thursday’s paper. I’m glad people at the church took the time to be confused about what was painted. Most targets of vandalism have a knee-jerk reaction to it, without spending a second to think why they may have been targeted.
Vandalism is not the way to get message across
I had toyed with writing this letter in any case, but the story gives me a bit of a push. I find it a difficult letter to write. Not because I feel an ambivalence or uncertainty about the issues. I do not. Nor do I condone vandalism in any way, shape or form.
Strict guidelines rule cheese product content
What do you think about when you buy a cheese product? Do you contemplate the percentage of water carefully measured so as to perfectly complement the amount of dry product? Or perhaps you question the cheese’s bacteria levels and hope proper temperature controls were followed.
Candidate forums give all a chance to pick our new leader
This is your time. On Sept. 14 and 15, four men are on campus to speak with all of us: David Chicoine, Norval Pohl, Colin Scanes and William Marcy. One of them will be SDSU’s next president. At your forum, you have the right – the responsibility – to help select the next leader of this university.
Volleyball invites rival teams for Jackrabbit Invitational
With returning top players and a 7-3 record, the 2006 Jackrabbit Volleyball Team seems to have a solid start toward achieving its primary goal this season. “Our number one goal is to make the postseason. We just need to beat teams that we’re supposed to, and hopefully beat some teams that we’re not, and just beat everybody else,” said Head Coach Andrew Palileo.
Only students lose if reporters barred
At issue: The Regents barring media from open forums Sept. 14-15. Our view: It’s illegal and unfair to cut journalists — and students — out of the process. It could’ve gone so well. Four men want to be South Dakota State University’s president. They’re talented, experienced and highly qualified.
Ball Talk
As the Major League Baseball season winds down, I feel compelled to write about the Minnesota Twins. This past summer has been one of the most enjoyable Twins-viewing summers I can remember. It marks the sixth consecutive year the Twins will finish with a winning record.
Jacks eye Panthers for win
The Jackrabbits scored a touchdown on the first drive of the game against the University of Montana, accomplishing a feat they did not last year. After the first drive, the game played out much the same as last year’s, with the Jackrabbits getting shut out.
