The Issue: High school and SDSU students lack entertainment options.
It seems that many students (especially those under 21) are often bored to the point of insanity. It’s not because they have no homework, although that may be the case in several situations. It’s not because we are lazy or purposely sleeping 15 hours a day. But basically because there is nothing to do in this town.
Sure, the older students can go to the bars at night and spend too much money on a few drinks, but overall there is really nothing else to do.
Besides the campus and busy downtown areas, most weekend nights, Brookings doesn’t have much of a college-town atmosphere.
There are several things kids can do on-campus. These include Jack’s Place, sporting events and musical/theatrical showcases. But what should we do every other night?
Something that I’ve always wanted to see is a small coffee/internet cafe. A small store selling lattes and cheesecake slices while you can sit down and check your mail or do some homework.
I know what some of you are thinking. It’s called Java City and The Union. But what do we do when Java City closes?
And no offense to the campus, but sometimes I just need to get away. There’s something refreshing about leaving, knowing that there is still something out there.
In approximately one year and 17 days, I will be able to celebrate the end of each day with a legal drink and possible trip to one of our many bars. But until then, am I just supposed to sit here and twiddle my thumbs? Because as much fun as that sounds … I don’t really want to.
Another possible idea is actually getting some GOOD stores in the malls. I mean, Claire’s is cool and all, but only for about five minutes … and most likely only for the girls (and mostly under 16).
Not only would this offer entertainment, but also a few job opportunities and economic growth. It seems wierd that in the past few years, Brookings hasn’t really grown besides a Super Wal-Mart.
The Brookings elementary schools are even having a hard time providing enough room for their kids. In a few year, the town will be blooming and there will be absolutely nothing to do.
Think college kids drink too much? Well, how about you give us something else to do. Something that doesn’t involve alcohol. Then you can complain about what we do.
