Gubernatorial hopeful speaks to SDSU College Democrats

Gubernatorial candidate Dennis Weise spoke to the SDSU College Democrats in the Walder Room of the Union March 15. Weise announced his candidacy just one day before his on-campus appearance. The people of South Dakota need a “much more effective and strong voice” to represent them, he told students in attendance, which numbered close to three dozen.

City Council agrees: Brookings needs more retailers

The Brookings City Council gathered on March 14 to discuss future options to expand the Brookings community. A recent purchase of 26 acres east of Interstate 29, totaling roughly $4 million, has been made for the development of the retail industry. Some council members agree that Brookings is lacking in retail and that expanding the choices available for shopping is a necessity to the city.

Group explores evolving India

A country that supports democracy and strives after economic growth, India is establishing itself to become one of the world’s elite. Culture, environment and food systems were the primary elements South Dakota State University students studied while spending spring break in India.

Student trip brings possible new exchange program

While numerous college students were tanning in South Padre, raving in New York City and surfing in California, a group of SDSU students spent their spring break in Winnipeg, Canada. From March 8 to March 10, six global studies students attended the University of Winnipeg for a UW student-directed conference, lectures, workshops as well as met with members of the UW Global College and Department of Politics.

Men and women swing into spring golf season

The men’s and women’s golf teams started their spring season with a trip to Florida over spring break. The men competed in the Fort Lauderdale Classic, which took place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The women attended the NIU Spring Lake Intercollegiate, in Sebring, Fla.

Volleyballs seen flying around Frost Arena during the spring

The SDSU volleyball team began its spring season this past weekend. The Jacks hosted three teams in Frost Arena on March 25, winning two games and losing one. The Jackrabbits defeated a team consisting of SDSU alumni and a team filled with St. Cloud State alumni, but lost two out of three games to the North Dakota State University varsity squad.

Wellness Center gains final approval

The plan to build a new wellness and recreation center has received final approval from the Board of Regents. The plan to build a wellness center began in the mid-1990s and will finally came to fruition. The current plan includes an indoor track, basketball courts, a cardiovascular workout area and weight room.

Justice Department declares terrorist surveillance legal

Conversations between doctors and patients, and between attorneys and clients, usually confidential, may be legally monitored under President Bush’s surveillance program, the Justice Department revealed last Friday. The department stated it would have no qualms against using such information in court.

With the possible exception of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, there is possibly no higher honor for a female pop culture staple than to grace the cover of Playboy magazine. Some women work their entire careers to land a Playboy cover, but Jessica Alba is not one of them.

Garden Line’ launches 24th season April 25

“Garden Line,” a South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service production, will return to the air for its 24th season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 on South Dakota Public Broadcasting TV (SDPB-TV). The show features a panel of SDSU experts answering viewers’ yard and garden questions.
