The Issue:

With spring break quickly approaching, students still have a small chance to make plans

For spring break last year I went to New York City. This year, I knew that would be hard to beat.

In fact, I waited until the last minute to make plans. I kept holding out, thinking maybe some of my friends would have great plans.

After a while, I decided that however fun a trip in the sun would be, maybe I’d go a different route. And that is how I came upon a trip with the United Methodist Student Center.

The thing is, even if you don’t have plans for spring break, you can still make use of your time.

Find a local shelter or volunteer center and give your time up to those who may need it. It’ll give you something to do and might feel a little rewarding at the end.

Want to get out of town? Find near-by towns that have some sort of historical value behind them, gather a few friends and road trip. If you’re 21, make a trip to several different small-town bars or, if you live near a larger town, visit those places you’ve always wanted to, but never really had the time to see.

Go shopping at small, local thrift stores. Wake up late, follow the sun to your next adventure and get a hotel whenever the sun goes down. Volunteer for others and get to know a few other people.

There are many ways to spend spring break. And if all else fails, you could try begging your parents for a few hundred dollars and by that last-minute ticket to the islands where all your other friends are.

In my opinion, spring break doesn’t need sunshine and beaches to be good and memorable. You can make memories anywhere you go, from Cancun to Canada to your local soup kitchen.

The people you spend it with and the bonds you make with them will make your vacation.

Come on. It has to be better than working.
