2 slates vie for student leadership

Two candidates vie for presidency and shared their views in a debate this last week. Their bios follow. Running for president is junior agriculture education major Brad Blaha. His goals, if elected, are to reform residence hall policies, make Hobo Days more memorable for all students and create a peer mentorship program for incoming students.

Wacipi held this weekend at Frost Arena

A majority of the Frost Arena seats were filled this weekend at the 16th annual Wacipi Pow-wow. While marching in, the American Indians held the American, South Dakota and tribal flags. Soldiers marched beside those who lived ordinary lives, and children walked with those who run their communities.

Students’ Association budget approved at Monday’s meeting

The Students’ Association budget of $69,843 was approved at Monday’s meeting. An $8,000 increase is included in the budget for the creation of a safe ride program for SDSU students. Although the safe ride funds do not have to be used, having the $8,000 in the budget will help secure a matching grant from the SD Department of Transportation.

Wellness fair brings record attendance

A record number of students attended this year’s health and wellness fair. A total of 1,405 students visited this year’s fair, compared to last year’s total of 1,250.

Hockey team defeats Iowa State to win title

SDSU hosted and won the Great Plains Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament this past weekend. The Jacks defeated Carleton College on Friday, Feb. 24, then defeated Iowa State University for the championship on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Jackrabbits defeated Carleton College, 9-2, in Friday night’a game.

Mathews Hall gets overhaul for ’06-’07

Even with all the changes during the past few years, SDSU will continue making a few more chnages for next year. Mathews’s Hall will be made into the new Learning Living Community for health, engineering and honor students. As it stands now, Pierson houses honor students on its fourth floor.

Olympic Games come to an end with mixed results for America

Upon the snow, slopes and ice of this year’s Olympics, golden performances and muddled disappointments were provided for those who cared enough to watch the games. The United States finished second in the total medal count with 25, behind Germany’s 29 medals.

Women’s basketball set to finish the season at home

Every good thing comes to an end. Then again, maybe it doesn’t have to. After a season for the Lady Jackrabbits that started off less than fantastic at 10-8, the Jacks have finished their last leg of the season strong, winning eight straight-five of which were on the road.

Sioux Falls on Vikings’ radar

The Minnesota Vikings may be moving their annual training camp. Sioux Falls was a favorite for the training camp two years ago until the Vikings decided to stay at their current home in Mankato, Minn. The reason Sioux Falls was turned down dealt with issues related to the acquisition of a new Vikings’ stadium.

SDSU does not need a varsity hockey team to entertain fans

Growing up in Minnesota, it is hard not to have at least a mild interest in hockey. I have never been a large hockey fan, but I have a passing interest in it. I never played hockey on a team, only basketball. However, when I was younger, my friends and I would spend many winter evenings playing hockey in my backyard on an ice rink my dad built.
