SDSU celebrates 125 years of excellence

February 21 marks the 125th anniversary of SDSU. Classes will be excused from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the celebration.

“When a fine institution has served well for over a hundred years, it is always a cause for celebration,” said President Peggy Miller.

The program takes place in the Volstorff Ballroom in the Student Union. The celebration will feature the Jazz Band, the SDSU Jack Rabbit andcake and ice cream.

John Miller will do a book signing of his new book “South Dakota State University: A Pictorial History, 1881-2006.” Earlier this year, his book sold out at the SDSU bookstore and was checked out constantly at the local libraries.

SDSU will unveil a new ice cream flavor during the celebration. The flavor has been in the works for a while. Students entered a contest to come up with the new flavor that will be revealed at the ceremony. The new flavor will be unique and represent the 125th anniversary.

The winner of the cake contest will also have her cake featured at the 125th celebration. Larsen won the cake competition for SDSU’s 125th anniversary celebration.

“It was such a great idea for this celebration, I was completely surprised when I won,” said Larsen. Her mother taught her a lot of the basic techniques used in making this cake. From her recipe, ARAMARK will make cakes.

Campanile replicas and Campanile chocolate bars will be available for purchase. A program will begin at 4:30 p.m. The event will include visual displays and presentations. The SDSU Woman’s Choir will sing “Yellow and Blue” and “Happy Birthday.”
