Experiencing Cairo from a Brookings point of view

This is Cairo, the city called the Mother of the World. Al Qahira, “the Victorious,” is an amazing, vibrant city with alleys filled to the roofs with people, people and more people. My fellow study-abroad students describe this place in terms that vary as much as the street corner scenery.

“Mob” steers listeners in wrong direction

While preparing for this week’s issue Monday night, we were alerted to the commotion outside. As the Collegian staff sat waiting for the power to come back on, we found out that there was a “mob” outside, vandalizing the campus. Hearing the word “mob” and that the group was on the move, I have to admit it scared the staff.

Moderacy key to debate

Hello everyone. Great paper the last two weeks! I love arguments over religion and abortion; they are lovely topics that will surely continue to be debated until the end of time! If nothing else, they are topics that certainly make for stirring debates and interesting reading.

Learning by example; practice what you preach is important

As a member of the Mormon Church, I am often asked whether or not I am Christian. Whenever this question is posed, I explain that the official name of the church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We believe in Jesus Christ. We talk of Christ, rejoice in Christ and preach of Christ.

Power outage leads to vandalism

Students filled the SDSU Campus Monday around 11 p.m. during a campus-wide power outage. Some campus property was damaged, and one arrest was made. The three-hour demonstration included “around 500 students interested in what was going on, and needed to use up their energy,” said Doug Wermedal, vice president of student affairs.

Voters turn out for vote, approve both issues

Thirty-nine percent of Brookings’ registered voters turned out for the city’s special election. Both city ordinance 22-05 and resolution 61-05 were passed by voters. The ordinance, which will create a Retail Economic Development Fund, was approved with 53 percent of the vote, and the resolution passed with 51 percent.

Volleyball competes at home

The Jacks defeated Drake in four games, and finished off Utah Valley State in five games. The team“s next two home games are this weekend against Northern Colorado and IP-Fort Wayne.:

SDSU to host UC-Davis at Howard Wood Field

In a decision that was made a long time ago, the SDSU Athletic Department scheduled a home game at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. The department made this decision in hopes of creating a new market to draw fans for football. “We want to make SDSU South Dakota’s team,” said SDSU Athletic Director Fred Oien.

Jackrabbits host 11 cross-country teams in SDSU Invitational

After two out-of-state meets, the SDSU Cross-Country team hosted its first home meet Saturday at the Edgebrook Golf Course. The competition drew teams from 11 colleges. Nebraska, Iowa State, Drake, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Minnesota State-Mankato, University of Mary, Black Hills State and the University of Sioux Falls were all in attendance at the SDSU Invitational.

Rehnquist, 80, dies at home

Chief Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist died on Sept. 3. Rehnquist was 80 years old and had served as chief justice for 19 years. He had been battling thyroid cancer for several months, and had undergone a tracheotomy and chemotherapy treatments.
