The administration is the be-all and end-all of SDSU. It is the driving force of the university that determines what happens on this campus.

The administration is made up of four main positions: the president, executive vice president for administration, vice president for academic affairs and assistant vice president of academic affairs. It just so happens that women fill three of those top four positions. Women also fill other leadership positions such as deans and department heads. This is the 21st century where women should be counted as equals in the work force. However, in many fields that isn’t the case. Having so many women leaders says something about this university.

It says that SDSU doesn’t allow gender to control the way it does business. SDSU isn’t afraid to have women in its administration when men run many other institutions.

SDSU faculty and students should be proud of their women leaders because it’s a relatively rare accomplishment in South Dakota.

South Dakota is a traditional, conservative state, which doesn’t have many women in high-ranking positions. So it is truly inspiring to see that South Dakota’s largest university has three women in its top administrative positions. It shows that SDSU can color outside the lines.

Females also have major leadership roles in student organizations, such as president of the University Program Council and president of the Students’ Association.

SDSU’s women leaders are role models, even if they don’t know it. They encourage female students and prospective students to work to reach their goals.

Although there are many excellent male administrators and faculty members, it is a nice change of pace to see President Peggy Gordon Miller, Vice President for Academic Affairs Carol Peterson, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs Mary Kay Helling and SA President Amanda Mattingly working for a better SDSU.
