Union construction impacts life on campus
Last April construction started on the new student union and the heavy machinery has not left yet. With a drop in sales at the University Bookstore, organizations’ offices scattered across campus and classrooms doubling as dining areas, union construction has definitely impacted campus life at SDSU.
Doctoral degrees to be added
SDSU will offer three new doctoral degrees in nursing; geospatial science and engineering; and computational science and statistics beginning in the 2005 fall semester. At their December meeting, the South Dakota Board of Regents decided to instate six new doctoral programs throughout the state.
Friday fire, power outage unrelated
Friday’s emergency power shutdown and the Caldwell Hall fire were unrelated, officials said Monday. Campus power was shut down to fix two substation high voltage insulators, said Dean Kattleman, Physical Plant director. Kattleman said they noticed a power spike Friday afternoon and the harsh winter weather forced them to fix the problem immediately.
Mandatory health insurance rejected
Alakananda Mookerjee Collegian SDSU students won’t be required to buy health insurance, a committee appointed by the Board of Regents decided. The committee, which was formed to consider mandatory health insurance policies for students, struck down the proposed policy in December 2004.
Hip hop, spoken word artist to perform
A number of performers make their way through Brookings each academic year. However, one truly unique act will hit the stage this semester, and it is worth talking about. SDSU is halfway through its first year as a Divison I school, but most of SDSU’s athletic teams are not part of a conference and can not compete in Division I postseason. Athletic Director Fred Oien, along with others, have continued to remain in contact with administrators and present a positive image of SDSU athletics to other conferences.

Students’ Association senators junior Ryan Brunner and senior Kristin Olsen have been working on expanding the wireless Internet into the residence halls. The expansion would give nearly 1,200 currently registered dorm-dwellers many more areas to use wireless Internet.

What a difference one day can make. Saturday night’s women’s basketball game against North Dakota State University packed 4,739 Jackrabbit fans into Frost Arena. The Lady Jacks were back in action at home for the first time since Dec. 21 when they beat Ferris State (Mich.
Men and women: What’s the difference?
Over the past three years I have watched Jackrabbit basketball games. I was even there when the woman’s team won the National Championship. Each year has brought excitement and nail-biting games. This year has been different though. With so many road games and so few home games, it has been hard to get to games and back the Jacks.
