No connection between Senate race and Iraq policy

This is in response to “war on Iraq unjust; Bible full of absurd tales” by Mr. Religious.

For starters, I’d like to know what kind of connection you made between you taking a personal offense at Thune’s winning of the Senatorial election, Bush’s war policy, and your misguided understanding of the Christian faith.

You find it “incredible” that anyone can question the morals of a faith that encourages, in fact requires, its adherents to ‘kill the infidel,’ that means YOU, unless of course you’re Muslim. And I believe that this is a free country where one has the rights of freedom of speech. I thought this was a country of tolerance, it seems to me that tolerance has taken on a twisted meaning. Tolerance today means gay rights and everyone else should shut up, tolerance means unless it’s Christian bashing, don’t say anything bad about anyone, and as long as we keep playing ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’ you’re going to get your “Four More Wars.” It’s fools like you that terrorists love.

Pumpkins smashed, memories lost

Editor’s Note: The following letters were written by students in the third grade class at Central Elementary School. The students live in the downtown/university area and wanted to express their opinions to the “big people.” In keeping with the spirit of the letters, the letters were not edited for spelling or grammar errors.

Dear Editor,

I feel sad because someone threw a big pumpkin in the street and the pumpkin was named Rose. She was my best friend for prentend. My mom and I worked on it for one day and it was destroyed. I feel sad about this. It is wrong to smash other peoples pumpkins.

Bradi Miller

Dear Editor,

I feel sad for the kids that got their pumpkins smashed. I don’t know why someone did it, but I guess they thought it would be fun. I happened in October 2004.

Jacob Foiles

Dear Editor,

I think that smashing pumpkins is wrong. This happened on October 29, 2004. I am a third grader from Central elementary on 4th Street. The way it happend is that someone came up on to my steps and stole my pumpkin and smashed it. I’m wondering why they do this. This happend in Brookings. We are talking about opinions in class. It is my opinion that smashing pumpkins is wrong.

Addison DeHaven

Dear Editor,

My pumkin was smashed. This happened 3 weeks ago. At my house. I was mad. My mom was sad. I was gone and I saw my pumkin smashed. This was my favorite pumkin. I think they were mad when they smashed my pumkin. I got a new pumkin to carve.

Shawn Tanner

Dear Editor,

A few weeks before Halloween my pumkin named Bob got smashed. I was very sad and I cried. When I came outside I was angry because Bob was broken and it made it even worse.

I carved Bob with my best friend Kenzie Young. I had alot of fun, but when I saw Bob broken, all of the memories were lost. This was the first time it

happend. People also stole our fence pole. I keep on wondering why somebody would do it?

If they had kids and carved a pumkin with them and somebody smashed it, I wonder how they would feel?

Ellie Dunkle

Dear Editor,

I think it is not nice to smash cool pumkins. One of my pumpkins got stolen. It happend the night of spooky, scary, fun Halloween. Somebody stole it. It made me super sad and relly mad. I have no idea who stole my super cool pumkin. It happend at my small house. I am curious who took my cool pumpkin.

Gareth Mendenhall

Dear Editor,

I have strong feelings about when I got my pumpkin smashed. I wonder why someone did that? I carved my pumpkin with my brother and on Halloween it got smashed. My family and I feel bad because my pumpkin got smashed. I hope I never have my pumpkin smashed again. I took hours to carv my pumpkin. I’m really sad because when my pumpkin got smashed, it was in pieces when I got up. I do not like what someone did to my pumpkin. I can not believe someone pick up my pumpkin off my steps and smashed it.

Ally Link

Dear Editor,

People should pay attention to the stoplights and signs. If they don’t, people will lose there lives or have to pay a fine. It happened a few weeks ago. A person did it cause they weren’t paying attintion. It made me feel scared, cause somebody could get hurt.

This happened on Harvey Dunn Street. Wreckless driving is a very bad thing. I was walking my Aunt Darcey’s dog and this red car came zooming by. Please drive carefully.
