SA to send care packages to troops

With so many troops from Brookings and Watertown soldiers overseas right now, Students’ Association members have decided to send holiday care packages to the soldiers in Iraq. “The Students’ Association is the governing body on campus,” said SA administrative assistance Line Stevens.

Five quitting senators leave SA in lurch

The Students’ Association will be out five senators at the end of this semester – something it’s never had to deal with before – and its constitution is unclear about what to do about it this late in the year. James Beatty, a senator for the College of Engineering and John Kappes, a senator for the College of Pharmacy, resigned this semester saying they were too busy.

Athletic department budget to double in five years

The athletic program budget at South Dakota State University is expected to almost double in the next five years as the school moves to NCAA Division I. The athletic department at the Brookings school earned about $4.8 million and spent more than $4.8 million in 2003-04, the university’s last school year in Division II.

Struggle against the Scale

Eating is a human necessity, but for Dalyn Darrington, it became a battle. From the time she was 12 years old, Darrington thought she was fat. She could only see herself as overweight even though she wasn’t – now she realizes her mind was playing tricks on her.

Students get to meat of it

The SDSU Meat Lab has the small town feel of a local butcher shop. “It contains facilities for animal harvest, carcass fabrication, sausage and cured meat processing, meat smoking and retail sales,” said Neil “Ed” Johnson, the meat research lab manager. “There are two full-time employees — the meat lab manager and a meat chemist — who supervise multiple students.

Engineering majors to showcase projects at conference Engineering students from SDSU will showcase their projects at the 10th annual Senior Engineering Design Conference Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Brookings Inn. Students, faculty and the general public can expect to see a variety of different project designs on display at the event, which shows how fundamental science, engineering and technology bring together students’ ideas that result in a practical design.

SA OKs budgets for three campus orgnizations

The Students’ Association’s approved budgets for the International Relationships Club (IRC), Helping Everyone Reach Optimal Health (HEROH) and Student Health and Counseling Services at the Nov. 15 meeting. The IRC received $16,500, which is the same amount it requested last year.

Sinte Gleska president opens lecture series

Lionel Bordeaux, president of Sinte Gleska University, spoke on the formation of Tribal Colleges during a presentation at the South Dakota Art Museum on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Bordeaux’s lecture marked the inaugural address of the Presidential Lecture Series which has been initiated for the Presidents of Land Grant Tribal Colleges and Universities.

Lady Jacks dominate exhibition games, start 2-0

The SDSU women’s basketball team started the season off right Tuesday, Nov. 9, getting win number one out of the way. SDSU faced Southwest Minnesota State in an exhibition game that drew over 1,000 fans. The Jacks were down early, 7-0, but recovered and went on a 19-2 run to take a 42-30 lead into halftime.

Men’s basketball gets first win

The SDSU men’s basketball team begins its first season in Division I with a lot of youth and a new defensive scheme both of which were evident during the Saturday, Nov. 13, exhibition game against Concordia-St. Paul as the Jacks prevailed 73-57. SDSU struggled out of the gate as the Golden Bears had a 13-6 lead five minutes into the game, but the Jacks responded with a 22-4 run that eventually resulted in a 39-27 halftime lead that they would not give up.
