Ensembles to perform jazz

The SDSU Jazz Ensembles will perform at the Winter Jazz Concert Thursday, Nov. 18.

The program will begin at 8 p.m. in Larson Memorial Concert Hall in the Performing Art Center.. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for students 12 and older. SDSU students with identification will be admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door or from the SDSU Music Department, (605) 688-5187. All proceeds benefit the Jazz Ensemble Program at SDSU.

The ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Corliss Johnson, will perform a wide variety of jazz music with styles ranging from swing, Latin and balladto up-tempo barn burners.

Minneapolis guitar quartet comes to Brookings

Arguably one of the world’s leading guitar ensembles, the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet will perform a concert in the Brookings Chamber Music Society series.

The concert, which will take place Friday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center will feature works ranging from the Spanish Renaissance to commissioned and contemporary works.

The ensemble has performed at universities and festivals throughout the United States, and has released several CDs in the past few years. They have performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Owensboro, (Ky.), Symphony.

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $7 for students, and may be purchased at the door beginning the afternoon of the performance.

USD professor speaks about muscular dystrophy

Dr. Evelyn Schlenker, an expert in respiratory physiology, will speak on “Muscular Dystrophy: From Men to Mice” on Friday, Nov. 19.

Sponsored by the SDSU chapter of Sigma Xi Honor Society, the lecture is free and open to the public and will begin at 1 p.m. in Dairy-Microbiology room 100.

Dr. Schlenker, a professor in the Division of Biomedical Science at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in Vermillion, has done extensive research on muscular dystrophy. Her lecture will deal with the types, causes and characteristics of the disease, past and future studies and potential therapies that may be used in its management.

Seniors to perform music recital

Two SDSU music merchandising majors, Anthony Virelli of Royal, Iowa, and Darla Virelli of Algona, Iowa, will perform their senior recitals at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14.

The recital, free and open to the public, will take place in Peterson Recital Hall in Lincoln Music Center.

Anthony, a vocal major, will perform operas and oratorio, Spanish songs and “Songs of the Open Road” by Williams.

Darla, a clarinet major, will perform “Concertino” by Weber, “Rhapsody” by Osborne and “Sonatina” by Szalowski.
