This is your chance to see more men in tights then when Robin Hood and his band of do-gooders lived in Sherwood Forest.
But in this case, you probably won’t see any sword fights unless there’s a traitorous posse of jealous runner-ups.
The 2004 Miss Homelycoming Pageant features men vying for a beauty pageant crown – in women’s clothes. Each contestant will participate in a choreographed group dance number, talent section, and questioning period onstage. They will also strut their stuff in swimsuits and formal wear.
“Hopefully, the audience gets into it; if they think it’s as funny as we do, it will be a good time. It’s not like we do this all the time or anything,” says contestant Charles Woodward, 23, a fifth-year nursing major from Sioux Falls.
Woodward will lip-sync “I’ve Never Been To Me,” by Charlene, while his friend Travis Mikkelson plans to sing Celine Dion’s Titanic theme, “My Heart Will Go On.”
“I think the pageant is funny,” says says Mikkelson, 21, a consumer affairs and Spanish junior from Viborg.
“I did a drag queen contest during freshman year and got second. This year, I just want to make people laugh,” he says.
Hobo Day Grand Pooba Kasey Bickel says this is the first year that the University Program Council has offered this kind of event.
“We hope to get good attendance so we can look into doing it again next year and making it part of the Hobo Days tradition,” says Bickel, a 20-year-old sophomore from Timber Lake.
Miss Homelycoming, the first runner-up and Miss Congeniality will get awards. Miss Homelycomingwill also ride in the Hobo Day parade.
