HPER draws more students with new exercise equipment

New exercise equipment and the desire to keep off the freshman fifteen had more students filing into the Wellness Center this fall. The Wellness Center added five ellipticals, three treadmills, a recumbent bike and stair-stepper to its array of workout machines.

Students take advantage of two new campus clubs

SDSU has two new clubs on campus: the American Humanics and the Chicanos in Action. The Students’ Association approved constitutions for both clubs at their Nov. 1 meeting. Each group submitted a copy of their bylaws to SA and members of the clubs spoke to senators about the importance of their club.

Classroom in the sky provides students ‘unique’ opportunities

For five years, students in the aviation program at SDSU have been taking learning out of the classroom and into the sky. The program, which is offered through the College of Education and Counseling, provides a degree in career technical education with a specialization in aviation education.

German Club selling chocolate advent calendars The German Club is currently selling chocolate-filled Christmas calendars. Each calendar is $2.75. They will be sold in the Larson Commons breezeway between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 22 to 24.

SA passes revised absence policy

The Students’ Association approved a revised absence resolution at the Nov. 22 meeting to present to the Academic Senate. SA recently presented an absentee resolution to the Academic Senate that proposed an absence policy. SA President Amanda Mattingly said that SDSU does not currently have policy stating what actions an instructor can or can’t take in regard to unexcused absences.

Off to the Races displays ethnic diversity

Doner Auditorium was filled with students Tuesday, Nov. 16, watching a play that dealt with how people judge one another based on appearances. Off to the Races, a social comedy/drama sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs office and performed by 7 AM Productions, has been running since 1994 and has four actors.

Ag Museum hidden SDSU treasure

Most of us have walked by it, but not nearly as many have been inside the State Agricultural Heritage Museum that sits quietly on the northwest corner of 11th Street and Medary Avenue. Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by an enormous, 65-horsepower, red, green and black steam engine tractor.

Having troubles navigating

Being handicapped may be challenging in its own right, but trying to get around campus is another matter entirely. Jamie Mack, a senior journalism student who is in a wheelchair, said he has to take all his tests in Pugsley, but it’s not very easy to use the elevators in the building.

Packers v. Vikings housemates share friendship, feuds

Dirty dishes, overflowing trashcans and empty rolls of toilet paper are the usual sources of tension between roommates. But for juniors Stefanie Fauth and Maggie Heiliger, the conflict is football. “Football season is only half the year, so we have half of it to patch things up and get really close before football season starts again,” said Fauth, an English education major from Miller.

Biology professor sues for back pay

A professor has sued South Dakota State University alleging that administrators consistently gave him smaller salary increases than his peers because of his race. Henry Kayongo-Male is a tenured biology teacher from Uganda who has worked at SDSU since 1986.
