Never stepped foot in Woodbine
The fact that discussion about Woodbine Cottage is continuing shows that there is a major flaw. I think Stephen Van Buren made a good point when he said, “The building is no longer historic, but only old-fashioned.” They added on to the building, how is that preserving history? It’s not. That is adding on new components. If it’s historical, it should be preserved as is and just fixed, not totally renovated. The house has not had insulation since 1881, why start now?
I understand that the money came from the HEFF, but the building does not meet certain criteria, like benefiting the students. Being on the Hobo Day Committee, I was looking forward to the dinner being there so I could actually go inside of it for the first time in my six-year college history. SMALL PROBLEM: because of the renovation, the dinner will not be held there. It was called “our home,” yet I have never stepped one foot in it and refuse to associate it as “my home.”
Our SA President Amanda Mattingly said, “I guarantee that students are not suffering or going without because of these renovations and improvements.” If that is true, why did student clubs like the men’s hockey team receive 22 percent less money? That is a STUDENT organization, now I would think if $450,000 came from students fees for the house, some of that might have been taken from the men’s hockey team. The men’s team was in the National Tournament for the second time in five years, so we reward them by cutting their funding? Also, the Women’s Hockey Team did not even receive enough money to pay for a twice-a-week practice. That does not even include games or travel. So, how are the students not suffering?
Those are just two programs that took major hits financially…how many other student programs lost money that “wasn’t due to the missing $450,000 in Student Fees.”

Protesters asked to move at Thune rally
John Thune hosted a rally Thursday night at Cinema 5.
As I walked in, 30 minutes early, there were a few supporters of Senator Daschle outside. I never really feel comfortable around Republicans anyway, so I joined them in peaceful and respectful support of our great senator. Unfortunately, the owner of the theater told us to move off his property to 6th Street, making us all but invisible. Quick thinking prevailed, and we instead moved in front of the Boys and Girls Club. Freedom: 1 – Fascism: 0.
You see, Mr. Thune has criticized Sen. Daschle many times because of the Senators comments on the eve of war, saying Sen. Daschle “emboldened the enemy.” Seeing as Saddam was found in a filthy hole in the ground, and no terrorist (that I know of) has given credit to Sen. Daschle, I asked Mr. Thune how exactly Sen. Daschle emboldened the enemy? Was there one example of the enemy attacking our soldiers or civilians because of what Sen. Daschle’s words?
Mr. Thune gave me a “criticism of the President on the eve of war is unpatriotic” line of bull, and told me we just had differing opinions. Differing opinions, yes, but we have the same facts. In no way did Sen. Daschle “embolden” an enemy, and in no way could his words possibly compare to President Bush taunting terrorists with “bring it on.”
Moral of this letter: Republicans say the darndest things, and Mr. Thune was unable to support his primary reason for replacing our states’ most powerful voice ever in Washington.
