On-campus vote effort hits snag with notarization

About 1,400 people who applied for an absentee ballot through the South Dakota Republican Party’s get-out-the vote program are being asked to verify their identity in an effort to clear up any mistakes made in the notary process, a GOP official said. The letters note a procedural error may have been made.

Mock debates, election to encourage political participation

In an effort to stir up politically uninvolved students, three clubs will host a mock debate and election. Three students will be on either side of the debate that will pit the Republican Party against the Democratic Party. Though the merits of individual candidates will doubtless come up during the predirected questions and the audience question time, the focus of the debate will be on party values as a whole, said junior Austin Olson, chairman of the College Republicans.

New minor for students in nonprofit organization

Construction isn’t the only thing new on campus this fall. A new minor in the College of Family and Consumer Science and a new student organization have become two of SDSU’s latest additions. The minor, Leadership and Management of Nonprofit Organizations, will offer students who wish to pursue careers working in nonprofit organizations a way to learn skills and gain valuable experience.

Rodeo queen devotes entire life to reign

Marie Schaller isn’t like the stereotypical rodeo queen. She didn’t compete in rodeo or “grow up” on a horse. “I’ve always admired rodeo queens growing up. I knew in my heart I had what it took,” she said. “This was something that I decided to do on my own.

Science experiments spark awards

Ryan Brunner started doing science experiments in first grade and he hasn’t stopped. “It was something that he was always motivated to do,” said his mother Eileen Brunner. “He just enjoys doing them, he didn’t get extra credit in high school for doing them it was something that just interested him.

Over 30 universities at grad fair Oct. 21 For students wishing to know more about attending graduate school, a graduate school fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Peterson Recital Hall in Lincoln Music Hall Thursday, Oct. 21. Representatives from over 30 colleges and universities all across the United States will be available to talk with attendees about the various graduate programs.

SA hosts open forum for District 7

Student Association President Amanda Mattingly announced that SA will be hosting an open forum-type debate for the state house and senate candidates in District 7. The SA met Monday, Oct. 18. The candidates are Roger Prunty, Rick Widman, Sean O’Brien, Larry Tidemann, Tom Bezdicheck and Orville Smidt.

Daschle makes campaign stop

Free t-shirts and clout. That’s what seemed to be on the minds of the 250 students at a rally Oct. 14 for supporters of U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D. The SDSU alumnus is currently locked in a race for his senate seat with Republican John Thune. Flanked by security and staff, Daschle thanked students for their support, which he said was vitally important to his re-election.

Jacks win Dakota Marker in down-to-wire football game

After battling new rival North Dakota State for the Dakota Marker on Oct. 9 in front of a Beef Bowl record of 12,323 fans, the SDSU football team enjoyed a bye this weekend. The rest came well-deserved after winning a hard-fought battle against NDSU 24-21 at Coughlin Alumni Stadium.

Cross country runners finish strong at meet

The men’s cross country team finished second while the women’s team placed seventh at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday, Oct. 16. Eighty-seven teams were seeded based on their rankings and divided among three races. Prior to the meet coach Rod DeHaven was certain that SDSU runners would do well.
