Woodbine funds should go to students

Dear President Miller,

I am pleased to see my tuition dollars could improve the aesthetic value of your home and perhaps make it a bit more comfortable. In addition, I am surprised to see that you could accomplish this daunting task for only a mere $450,000 (approximately $42 per student). Although I thought you should have spent the extra thousand and upgraded the siding from cedar to gold. Again, I would like to say thanks, and I am pleased to see our tuition dollars are being used wisely for your interests and not foolishly on our educations.

Build the president a new house for less

While $450,000 to “renovate” Woodbine Cottage is totally astronomical and outrageous, that’s not the worst part. The money is coming from STUDENT FEES. Since when is that an issue of the students? I would almost guarantee than less than 50% of the students have ever even been inside of the building. If the State Historical Society and the Brookings

Historic Preservation Commission are so concerned about the building, let them pay for the renovation and build the president a new house that could be built at a much grander scale and at a price tag far less than $450,000. And most importantly, don’t make the students pay for it. Look at the crap students live in, 8 X 12 cells that we are charged $3,500 a year for. When you do the math, the $450,000 doesn’t add up, is Clark Drew Construction Company seriously the cheapest SDSU could find?

Pregnant in high school more difficult

The article titled “Women balance school, pregnancy” (Sept. 14) was to me made out to sound like it was so hard to do. I had my daughter when I was in high school and all the girls I hung out with had children at that time too. When I read the article it just seemed like that was the only time that it was hard for parents. I wish that I would have been in college when my daughter was born. The pregnancy would have been easier because you wouldn’t get all the bad looks, people talking about you behind your back, feeling like you had to hide it, losing respect from your teachers and other peers because they think you are a slut. Teachers in high school were not cool about pregnant teens, after the teachers found out (from the counselors) you could stand outside their doors and listen to them talk bad about you. I believe that being pregnant in college is a lot easier than high school, depending on if you have help from the father. I’ve known many girls that have had children and so not go on to college. To me that gave me more reason to go just like they said in the article.

Article made public Ritz Gallery issues

Our department students and faculty have expressed interest in Jeremy Fugleberg’s article, “So-Un-Ritzy, The Strange Life and Upcoming Renaissance of the Ritz Gallery,” which drew attention to an historic problem: the lack of a professional public gallery for their work. A student and a retired faculty member have encouraged me to clarify that our Grove Hall room that carries her name, remains an insufficient honor for Dr. Madeline Ritz, former Head of Visual Arts. Our Department legends hold that there would have been no Art Museum without Madeline who spent years selling Harvey Dunn prints to raise funds for the South Dakota Memorial Art Center, later renamed the South Dakota Art Museum. She hired our first artist-in-residence, Professor Emeritus Dick Edie; now we have five artists and two designers in residence.

And I need to clarify a quote and correct an error of mine: Professor Ritz was indeed a “tough lady,” and I meant that as high praise; and, she chain-smoked unfiltered Lucky Strikes, not Camels.

Lesbian posters for sale offensive

I was deeply offended at a picture presented by the University Program Council’s poster sale. This picture included a large image of two females in their undergarments locking lips. Instead of telling you why I consider this offensive, I intend to tell you why God does. I Corinthians 6:9 blatantly states that homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. God created us, as humans to be married to someone of the opposite sex, and to have a pure, loving, and yes, even a sexual relationship with that person. God still loves those people who choose to live as homosexuals.

Now of course, I realize that not all readers are Christians, and that a good number of you are offended by this letter. God’s opinion of me is too important to let issues like this slide. Since homosexuality is such a big issue these days, we must speak our mind while we still can. If we don’t do it now, sooner or later, this country that we live in will no longer be a place we can depend on for everything we hold dear. There are a lot of us out there, but so many are afraid to speak up. Believe it or not, if someone doesn’t, nobody will.
