Visa trouble keeps student from SDSU after trip to Pakistan

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Four weeks after Faisal Mustafa thought he’d be back at South Dakota State University from a visit to family in Pakistan, the computer expert and student still is waiting for immigration officials to give him permission to return to the United States.

Gas station changes its name

Lloyd’s Amoco, a gas station near I-29, received a facelift over the summer and is under new ownership. The station’s sign has changed to BP and is now owned by Lance Park and his family. The former owner, Lloyd Anderson, owned the Amoco for over 30 years.

Event held to bring students downtown

Downtown Brookings was hopping Sept. 16, as students and members of the community participated in Take it to the Streets, an event to draw SDSU students downtown. In its fourth year, 33 businesses participated by offering prizes like gift certificates, jackets, a diamond pendent and a mountain bike.

Soccer and volleyball add to win columns

The South Dakota State University women’s soccer team won its home opener at Fishback Soccer Park Saturday 3-1 over Wayne State (Neb.). The Jackrabbits outshot the Wildcats 41-11 on the day, including a 26-2 advantage in the second half. Kelsey Worcester, a freshman from Anamosa, Iowa, scored the Jacks’ first goal of the contest, when she scored from five yards out in the first half.

Cricket team wins tournament

For the first time ever, SDSU’s cricket team, made up mainly of graduate students from India, competed in the Cricket Lite Tournament in Fargo, and walked away with first place. SDSU’s cricket team competed against five teams: North Dakota State University-A, North Dakota State University-B, Fargo-Moorhead Community-Concordia, University of North Dakota and Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

Taco-maker competes for fastest taco time

Nicole Herrig, assistant manager at Taco John’s, is the fastest taco-maker in the country. At a national Taco John’s competition in 2002, Herrig prepared a four-part meal consisting of a hard shell taco, super nachos, potato oles and a chicken soft shell in 69 seconds.

Local employees win big in Athens

While you will not find the company’s name on the over 40 displays set up at the Olympics this year, Daktronics has most definitely been turning heads in the corporate world. Daktronics, a Brookings-based LED sign company, was hired as a subcontractor and supplier to The Swatch Group, based in Switzerland, for the Olympics.

Nick’s Hamburgers still cookin’ at 75

Burgers, chips, beverages, and shakes made with hand-dipped ice cream; that’s the menu everyday at Nick’s Hamburger Shop in downtown Brookings. This menu has also been the driving force behind the shop’s 75 years of success, and counting. In 1929, Harold and Gladys Niklason opened Nick’s Hamburger Shop, where they served five-cent hamburgers and good coffee.
