$450,000 renovations begin on Woodbine Cottage

Major renovations to Woodbine Cottage, home to every president of South Dakota State University since 1903, began Sept. 7 and should be complete by this Thanksgiving. At a projected cost of $450,000, Clark Drew Construction Company of Brookings earned the bid for a complete external renovation of the Queen Anne-style home that was built in 1887.

Ordering food in Brookings just got easier. Now students can go online to order pizza, subs or Chinese food, and have it delivered right to their dorm room. And for two weeks starting Wednesday, Campusfood.com will be giving away free pizzas. Students can go to the website to view an entire interactive menu and place orders to restaurants in the area.

Graduate students, professor get ready for Antarctic research trip

You want to know how three SDSU chemists prepare for a trip to Antarctica? They use a walk-in freezer. “So we stand in there in our shorts in front of the fan and say, ‘Okay, this will be a nice day at the South Pole,’” said Dave Ferris, chemistry graduate student.

Brookings sees business, population growth

Brookings is growing, both in terms of businesses as well as the size of the population, say community leaders. And the signs of that growth are visible just about everywhere: on the South Dakota State University campus, downtown and even on the streets. Char Hovland, industry relations specialist for Midwest Dairy Association, who has lived in Brookings for over 20 years, feels that the town has more hustle-bustle today than it did earlier.

SDSU names McGee as equestrian coach

South Dakota State University has hired a coach for its women’s equestrian program, which is the university’s newest sport and was added last semester to comply with Title IX regulations. The university will officially start competing in fall 2005. Megan McGee, who led Fresno State to six straight IHSA appearances, has been hired as the new coach.

Jacks win home opener 45-20

The SDSU Jackrabbit football squad bounced back from their season-opening loss Saturday night as they defeated Winona State 45-20 in front of 8,718 Cereal Bowl fans at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. “It’s good to be on the other side,” said wide receiver Brian Janecek.

Friends of Oak Lake end season with star party A star party Saturday evening, Sept. 18, will close the 2004 Friends of Oak Lake season. Larry Browning of the SDSU Physics Department will guide a study of the prairie night sky at Oak Lake Field Station. “This is one instance where the remoteness of the Field Station is a big advantage,” said Gary Larson, Friends of Oak Lake membership chair.

Spanish students ‘immersed’ in Costa Rican culture

Spanish students found out that learning a language goes hand-in-hand with experiencing a culture. Over 40 students went on a study abroad trip and studied at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose through May. Students were assigned to live with host families.
