Students compete in ag events at Little I

SDSU students and high schools students from South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa competed in the 81st Little International over the weekend. “It’s one of the largest collegiate events,” said senior Sarah VanDerVliet. Little I is a competition in which students compete on their knowledge of animals and agriculture.

India Night ushers in spring

The Volstroff Ballroom at the University Student Union wore a festive look Saturday as it pulsated to the sights, sounds and flavors of India. It was the first official day of spring and the last day of the year 2060, as per the Hindu calendar. To greet the arrival of the green-season and to ring in the New Year, the Indian Students’ Association put up a cultural extravaganza: India Night 2004.

Board of Regents raises S.D. tuition 5.5 percent

Students at South Dakota’s six state institutions will be paying more for their education this fall following a Board of Regents decision last week to raise tuition 5.5 percent. According to documents the Regents discussed at their Thursday meeting on the SDSU campus, the average undergraduate student will end up paying around $250 more in tuition over the course of a year.

SDSU sees very few drug problems

After a large meth bust in Mitchell and warnings that drugs are entering our rural state, some students might wonder if SDSU and Brookings are at any risk for drug infiltration. However, while the danger is real, most students and some officials say things in Brookings are fairly quiet in the area of drugs.

Apparel merchandising: destination New York

Most people have had the dream of visiting New York City; a group of South Dakota State University students are lucky enough to do so. The voyaging group will consist of Apparel Merchandising students and professors, including Professor Nancy Lyons. Nancy Lyons sees these trips as very educational for the students.

Electrical engineering professor wanted to be just like her father

“When I first came here, it surprised me so much to see that fashion doesn’t change from one season to the other. When I was growing up in Egypt, I still remember giving away clothes because they were no longer a la mode. But here, I realized that we could continue wearing the same clothes year in and year out till they looked frayed!” she said with a broad smile.

Writer’s conference considered great success

With over one hundred people at certain events on Monday, the 28th Annual Great Plains Writer’s was, “very successful,” according to event coordinator Dr. Mary Ryder. The conference focus this year was “Untold Stories: Lost and Forgotten Voices of the Plains.

Students find style at fashion show

Students were told to unleash their style Friday at the annual EXPO Fashion Show in the Performing Arts Center. The show, entitled “Unleash Your Style”, was sponsored by the College of Family and Consumer Science and was organized by students of the fashion promotion and visual merchandising class.

Festival brings global appreciation to SDSU
