I must confess, when I looked at the February 17th issue of the Collegian, I skipped over the sex column simply because of its title (“Blowjobs should be quick”). However, as controversy over the article began to rise, curiosity struck me and I read it. Frankly, I think the student body has every right to be upset. The idea of a sex column is not necessarily a bad one. Even the most abstinent of students would admit that sex happens at SDSU and addressing it in the Collegian is perfectly acceptable. The manner in which this particular column was written was vulgar, to say the least. Phrases like, “Sucking a guy off…” and “…the faster he’ll blow his load.” are inappropriate for a collegiate publication. Then, of course, there’s the one that takes the cake, “Having a girl bobbing around for hours, and only ending up with a giant hickey on his dick to show for it does not sound like a good time.” Things like these do not represent the level of journalistic integrity I have come to expect and should expect from this newspaper. However, if you are a person who whishes to read this type of profanity, Mr. Brandt was kind enough to tell you where to find it-Dan Savage’s “Savage Love” online. Such material is perfectly acceptable on the Internet, where it is easily accessible to only those who wish to see it, and where the author represents no one but himself. What kind of impression does this type of carelessness give to prospective students (and their PARENTS) who visit this campus? A sex column in a college-level newspaper is to be expected, after all, we are adults, but the column should be dealt with in an adult manner that is respectful to all students.
