Alaska’s constitution protects the possession of up to 4 ounces of marijuana (roughly a box of Grape-Nuts full of loose pot) for ‘personal use.’ A citizen’s referendum prohibiting the posession of any amount of marijuana, passed in 1990, was overturned last week by an apellate court. Why? Citizens can’t overturn the constitutional principle of privacy. It makes some sense. Constitutions, after all, are notorious stoners. Drafts of the U.S. Constitution and the Articles of the Confedera-tion were written on hemp paper. What became of the drafts is unknown, but Zig Zags weren’t invented until 1894. Hmmmm.
