Strange Combination Makes Great Album
This album smokes. That’s all that needs to be said. But for all you who need a description, here it is. The New Christs is a band fronted by former, and now current (they’ve reformed and an album is in the works), Radio Birdman vocalist Rob Younger. The band has had more line-ups than Deep Purple, but has never released a poor album.
Man and Band Keep on Playing
Bands come and go. Most people might mess around with a guitar or write a few songs in their late teens or early twenties. Some even form bands that quickly dissolve when success doesn’t materialize, or when the cold reality that one can’t make much money playing music sinks in.
Techno With Big Guitar
On a recent trip to the local record store I was bombarded by a sonic blast of synth. drums, tape loops and sound effects. “Oh no,” I said to myself. “I Hate techno!” A few moments later, this awful techno music included a knock-your-jaw-off guitar lead followed by a guitar sample -something you wouldn’t expect from a form of music that lacks musicians.
The Circle is Broken on the Less-than-perfect Thirteenth Step
Maynard James Keenan of Tool takes his side-project, A Perfect Circle, a step further. Two new-comers, Jeordie White, ex-bassist for Marylin Manson and James Iha, ex-guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins make their debut appearance in Thirteenth Step. A Perfect Circle’s debut record, Mer de Noms, is bound with heavy, symphonic tracks like “3 Libras.
A Mighty Wind offers heart and a whole lotta’ folk music
A Mighty Wind, out on video and DVD Tues., Sept. 23, is not the laugh-riot that This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman or Best in Show were. The movie doesn’t offer the quotable lines and endlessly re-singable songs of its mockumentary predecessors. It does, however, have one thing those three other films didn’t have.
