SDSU’s eight colleges give diverse opportunities

South Dakota State University describes diversity as a trademark of the education it offers. With undergraduate degrees offered in eight colleges and over 200 majors, the land grant institution provides a number of different opportunities to students looking to further their knowledge in a number of areas.

SDSU: It’s a lot more than cows and sheep

Sometime in your first year of college, you’re going to tell someone that you attend SDSU and they’re going to derisively refer to it as “Moo-U.” Don’t put up with this. While it’s true that we have a great agriculture program and a number of cows (if you live in Berg Hall, they’ll be your neighbors!), simply reducing us to the Moo-U stereotype ignores the fact that this is the most forward-thinking educational institution in this state.

DO bring some curtains; DON’T bring a chicken

Binnewies Residence Hall Director Kara Everhart laughs when she thinks of the things she has seen freshmen forget when they move into the dorms. “Most people don’t remember curtains, so we’ve seen people use shower curtains, blankets, tinfoil-lots of funky stuff,” Everhart said.

These are the places you will come to hang out at the most

Take it from us. We’ve been here the longest after all. There are certain places in this town that you’re going to remember for the rest of your life. There are other places you’ll probably never visit. Yeah, someday the jail might be important to you, but the day that happens, the rest of the stuff on this list is going to stop being important.

Meet the president of SDSU, Dr. Peggy Miller

Five years into her tenure with South Dakota State University, President Peggy Miller is still excited about each incoming class, especially as those classes look to increase the enrollment at South Dakota’s largest institution above its already record levels.

What will those hall dues do for you? A lot!

On the day you move in, the people at the front desk of your dorm are going to ask you if you want to pay even more money in hall dues. So what are you getting for your $30? Actually, you’re getting a lot. Music education sophomore Lacey Kruse, who lives in Pierson, said, “If you want to check out movies or the vacuum cleaner from the front desk, then you have to pay an additional fee.

A handy, dandy guide to SDSU’s structures

What follows is a brief description of the many, many buildings of SDSU and what you can expect to find in each and every one. Plus they’re listed numerically, so you can get from 1 to 83 even if you have no idea where Administration is! Please don’t get the idea that we hate any of these buildings.

Best of Brookings 2003

In March of 2003, two of our intrepid staff members set out to find the best edibles, drinkables and everything else in Brookings. This is what they came up with. We humbly re-present it to you, as you are new here and may not know of the wonders of Movie Gallery and Sound Station 7.

How to deal with roommates: Communicate, talk, discuss

Not all roommates are a match made in heaven. That’s what Nicki Galvin found out her freshman year at South Dakota State University. Galvin, now a junior nursing major from Faulkton, didn’t know her roommate when she came to college. “It was hard. We both didn’t know each other and it was awkward living in such small living quarters,” Galvin said.

SDSU to invest in new research park

Plans to build a University Research Park in Brookings may soon be a reality. The park would be a major research and economic development initiative for South Dakota. “Ultimately, this means an entirely new level of economic development opportunities for South Dakota and the region,” said SDSU graduate Governor Mike Rounds.
