Kaatz named new pharmacy dean

Dr. Brian Kaatz, acting dean of the College of Pharmacy, has been hired to the position permanently.

The position was made official by the Board of Regents at their March 13 meeting in Vermillion.

Kaatz, who beat out two other finalists for the job, has been teaching at South Dakota State University since 1989. He has also been head of clinical pharmacy. He is replacing Danny Lattin, who retired in October of 2002.

He will continue maintaining an office in Sioux Falls, where almost all of the department’s 16 faculty members are located.

Kaatz earned a bachelor’s degree from SDSU in 1974 and went on to get his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1977.

He then spent six years working as a clinical pharmacist at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls before taking a year-long position at the Rochester (Minn.) Methodist Hospital.

He then returned to Sioux Valley for four more years.

Kaatz lives in Sioux Falls with his wife Joyce. They have two grown children, David and Julie.
