War decision incites protest
About 50 protesters and supporters gathered behind the University Student Union last Thursday to debate the invasion of Iraq. An impromptu demonstration by pro-Bush supporters took place 15 minutes later in the same location. It seemed to provide comic relief, with signs reading “Impeach Saddam” and “The Prez is the coolest dude ever.
Parking ticket challenges may save you money
On a crowded college campus, there’s one fate worse than not finding a parking spot: getting a parking ticket. “I have about $90 in tickets so far,” Brian Dahl, freshmen general studies major, said. The University Police Department issues 20 to 30 parking-related tickets a day for everything from not having the correct lot permit to crooked parking violations.
KSDJ’s freedom ribbons find homes across SDSU
Just under 700 freedom ribbons symbolizing support for U.S. troops have been distributed among students by SDSU’s own 90.7 KSDJ between last Thursday and Monday night. “I’m extremely pleased with the response of listeners, both students and faculty,” Ashley Allen, 23, KSDJ station manager, said.
Oien admits Big Sky could be out of reach for SDSU
The recent formation of a Division I transition team has taken SDSU one step closer to athletic reclassification. Now all that is needed is a suitable conference. Officials thought the most suitable candidate was the Big Sky Conference, just to the west. However, in a recent meeting of conference officials, it was decided that, although expansion was an issue of interest, the Dakotas were an unlikely target.
Applebees restaurant expected next fall
Applebees Neighborhood Bar and Grill will open east of Interstate 29 in the fall if all goes according to plan, say the Brookings city manager and Applebees officials. Applebees will be only the third chain family restaurant in Brookings after Perkins and Country Kitchen.
Couple discusses “hot” viruses
U.S. Army Colonels Nancy and Jerry Jaax presented a lecture Tuesday night at the Performing Arts Center on campus at 7:00 p.m. about their expertise in “hot” [extremely infectious] viruses and high hazard biological research. Their presentation, “Inside the Hot Zone: Report from the Front Lines of Virus Control,” focused on their past experience with controlling a potentially lethal outbreak of the Ebola virus in Reston, Virginia.

Hollywood flair and rock star duds will flavor the annual apparel merchandising major-organized fashion show. It will be a change from past years, which displayed sportier, more mainstream clothing like Abercrombie&Fitch. About 20 different volunteer models will show off looks in categories that include rock, bright colors, vintage and classic black and white.
Kaatz named new pharmacy dean
Dr. Brian Kaatz, acting dean of the College of Pharmacy, has been hired to the position permanently. The position was made official by the Board of Regents at their March 13 meeting in Vermillion. Kaatz, who beat out two other finalists for the job, has been teaching at South Dakota State University since 1989.
We must be responsible citizens of the world
While in Manchester, England, I have had an opportunity to view the world and international politics from a perspective quite different than that of Brookings. Seeing the world through the eyes of the numerous British ethnic groups and the English news media has given me the following thoughts about citizenship.
We must find love beyond mere sex
This past semester our Bible study has been centered around “Hard Questions.” Interestingly enough, the night we were dealing with the topic of premarital sex was the night before the Collegian’s article on Love and Sex came out. I thought it was very interesting and we used some of the issues brought up in the article to discuss in our studies.
