Letters to the Editor

Collegian disrespectful

I write this letter with great disappointment in the Collegian staff and their misguided views on the impending war with Iraq.

In the Feb. 11 issue, in the editorial “Bush sends college students off to war,” the staff made remarks on yet another topic on which they “appear” to be severely uninformed.

In the article, the staff wrote “Bush has somehow made Iraq into the number one enemy despite the fact that none of the Sept. 11 hijackers were Iraqi … and no smoking gun has been found by the United Nations weapons inspectors.”

Iraq has been on the very top of the list as a potential threat to this country, and even more importantly, the world, for a very long time. The impending war with Iraq has not appeared out of empty space and is not some crazy idea of a warmonger President.

President Bush stated in his speech to Americans on the night of Sept. 11, “We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.”

It has been known for some time that Iraq is a terrorist country, harbors terrorists and even offers funds to the families of terrorists.

Saddam Hussein is a threat to every person inhabiting this planet.

The time has arrived for the United States of America to disarm Iraq with or without the approval of the rest of the world and with or without the approval of the general public. The United States would be ignorant if it stood on the sidelines and waited for another Sept. 11 or something of greater devastation to happen.

If it did happen, who could say we did not see it coming?

The staff also states, in reference to the men and women being called upon to fight, “They are simply hard-working pawns in Bush’s game.”

How dare you make reference to this impending war as a game?

And furthermore, how dare you insult the men and women who serve this country, who protect the very freedoms that allow you to watch everything play out from the comfort of your homes?

This is not a game and our soldiers are not pawns. They are freedom defenders and for that they deserve some damn respect.

Next time, think before you speak, or you might lose what little credibility you have left.
