Native American history celebrated
The 11th annual SDSU Conference on American Indian History and Culture will be held Thursday and Friday in the University Student Union. The purpose of the conference is to “emphasize the voices of Native peoples who are in the process of reclaiming their own history.

British foreign exchange student shares reaction to first powwow
Entering the pow-wow, the first thing I heard was the clinking of bells, lots of bells, and then before me stood the most amazing sight, a dancer dressed in his native tribal attire. As I walked into the main hall, I didn’t know where to look first. My eyes raced over Frost Arena, looking at all the dancers and native people and their costumes.
SDSU sends reps to SHED Days
Twenty South Dakota State University students who travelled to Pierre on Feb. 10 had the chance to talk to legislators about the issues that affect higher education. The legislature was holding Students for Higher Education Days (SHED), and several colleges and universities from around the state sent delegations of students to discuss several pending bills.
Soul food to be served on campus
South Dakota State University Dining Services will hold a soul food luncheon at noon on Feb. 24. Traditional soul food will include fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and peach cobbler. The foods will be served in Larson and Medary Commons and the Market.
UPC to hold winer formal
The University Program Council is co-sponsoring the Winter Magic Formal at the Brookings Park and Recreation Building on Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m. The night includes limo transportation, dinner, a magician, dance and door prizes. The event is also sponsored by the SDSU Residents Hall Association, the Students’ Association and X107.
DBI instructs owners on historical benefits
Downtown Brookings Inc., the organization of Brookings representatives who hope to analyze and improve small business in town, is taking another step toward informing business owners. The group has scheduled a pizza-and-pop workshop for Feb. 24 at 6 p.m., at the Old City Hall firehall at 310 4th St.
Vibe-n-Verse will perform Jacks’ Place
Spoken word and live jazz music will be fused together by the Chicago group Vibe-n-Verse in Jacks’ Place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. The event is co-sponsored by the University Program Council and the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs. The group creates an open mic poetry club atmosphere by blending original poetry with live music in a dramatic interaction.
