SD Senate kills minimum wage hike

PIERRE – An attempt to raise South Dakota’s minimum wage more than the federal amount failed to pass the Senate State Affairs Committee Feb. 7. Senate Bill 77, which would increase the minimum wage to $6.25 by April of 2004, provided a three-step system over the next year, which would increase the $5.

President Bush is currently considering several alterations to Title IX making it less rigid, according to USA Today. Proposed teacher distance learning bonus fails

PIERRE (CNS) – A House Committee killed a bill Feb. 6 to increase pay for teachers that use distance-learning technology. Rep. Cooper Garnos, R-Presho, introduced the bill. A teacher would have received $1,500 a semester for teaching a distance learning class under House Bill 1219.

Senate kills proposed wind power tax

PIERRE (CNS) – A proposal for taxing wind power was killed by the Senate State Affairs Committee Feb. 7. State Sen. Paul Symens, D-Amherst, who has worked with the issue of wind power for several years, felt that taxing companies by each kilowatt-hour of produced electricity would build a consistent structure for taxing wind energy in the future.

Bill could limit telemarketing

PIERRE – People may receive more protection from telemarketers under two bills that passed the South Dakota Senate Feb. 5. Senate Bills 33 and 41 would tighten restrictions on telemarketers by creating a ‘do not call’ list for South Dakota residents who don’t want to hear from them.
