State of the Union address shows President is desperate for war
President Bush’s State of the Union Address was like a well-skipped stone on a calm lake. He slightly touched on most of the topics, getting them barely wet, then dived right in for a long, drowning swim in war rhetoric. Bush’s obvious impotence with his poor domestic policies was skillfully ignored as he attempted to resurrect his “compassionate conservatism,” ignore his failure of the past two years and move right on to lambasting Evil Iraq.
SA allocates funds to Phi Tau Sigma
Students’ Association Senators approved a special allocation for Phi Tau Sigma at their Feb. 3 meeting in the lobby of Waneta Hall. Andrea Twedt, president of Phi Tau Sigma, met with the SA to ask for $840 to support sending five members to a national conference.

House passes SDSU building proposals
PIERRE (CNS) – Three projects proposed at South Dakota State University passed their second legislative test on Jan. 29. The South Dakota House of Representatives passed unanimously all three bills dealing with the projects. House Bill 1028 allows the Board of Regents to accept the donation of a swine nursery valued at $25,000 that the Department of Animal and Range Sciences will use to study swine nursery production.
House passes rodeo as new state sport
Rep. Larry Rhoden, R-Union Center, introduced a bill this legislative session to designate rodeo as the state sport. So far it’s passed the state House of Representatives with little opposition and now moves to the Senate. Rhoden said he thinks South Dakota should have a state sport that exemplifies the values and heritage of its people and promotes tourism and economic development.
Regents approve USD residential facilities plan
PIERRE – The South Dakota Board of Regents Thursday gave the go-ahead to a University of South Dakota plan to acquire a Vermillion apartment complex and make other improvement to its on-campus residential facilities. “This plan signals a significant change in the quality and makeup of housing choices for USD students,” said Regents’ President Harvey C.

I think SDSU should not move up to Division I. I think that South Dakota should continue to export talented youth. I think that moving to Division I will ruin the reputation of our university. I think that South Dakota residents deserve second best. I think that South Dakota residents deserve to feel inferior to residents of other states.
Our View:
The Bush administration is pushing schools to adopt a policy that teaches abstinence as the only way to guard against sexual horrors. This policy is misguided, dangerous and ultimately harmful to students. Admittedly, abstinence remains the only foolproof way to make sure that our nation’s citizens will not get pregnant or contract sexually transmitted diseases.

Team runs past expectations
The SDSU distance runners struggled this weekend at the Husky Open in St. Cloud, but the sprinters and throwers showed what they were made of with several top finishes and one school record. Ben Fast placed fourth in the shot put with his throw of 47 feet 6 1/2 inches, but made his mark in the weight throw.
