Downtown Shakedown

Downtown. It used to be the heart and soul of small towns across the country. But as discount mega stores, corporations and restaurant franchises began to fringe the outskirts of towns, shoppers were enticed by convenience and lower prices. Many small towns paid the price and businesses began closing down.

The Best of 2002

The year that was has long since gone, leaving in its wake a trail of good, bad and mediocre music and movies to serve as bread crumb paths to memory. Since choosing the “Year’s Best” music is nearly impossible for the sheer number of albums released and seeing all 237 films eligible for Oscar consideration is a punishing task all its own, The Collegian has conceded to difficulty and agreed to disagree on personal favorites.

TV’s Top 10 includes old favorites and new winners

The year 2002 will likely go down in the history of television as the year when reality shows spun off into even odder permutations and the year that cable finally overtook network television. Z’kota Grille: Burgers, beer and neon lights

The bittersweet adios of Brookings’ resident Hardee’s a few months ago sent rumors a’flying among fast food connoisseurs. Thus began the reign of the Z’kota Grille. Not straying far from its fast food predecessor, Z’kota offers the same basic sandwich and fries, fare and speedy service.

From Dec. 27, 2002 to Jan. 3, 2003, over 700 Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band members, faculty, friends and family went to Southern California for the 114th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade held Jan. 1, 2003. The Pride, the sixth entrant in the parade and the first non-military band, arrived in Pasadena, Calif.

Students’ budgets tight

It’s a familiar complaint that wafts over the SDSU campus every week. “But I don’t have enough money!” Especially after the first semester, money concerns seize students who have burned all of their summer work money and now have nothing more to spend. “The first couple months of school, I’d go to Wal-mart all the time and buy things I didn’t need,” said Sarah Leedom, a freshman music major from Sioux Falls.

Conference search aims for Big Sky

With a strong vote of confidence from the South Dakota Board of Regents, and a renewed passion and vision for the future, SDSU continued its quest for Division I athletics classification recently by formally initiating a search for a conference. The BOR voted, 6-2, to approve SDSU’s application to move to DI on Dec.
