The South Dakota State University men’s swimming team fell a few strokes short of the University of South Dakota 113-87 in the season-opening meet in Brookings on Friday.

Winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.50 seconds was Jacob Berg, a sophomore from New Ulm, Minn. Berg, along with Chad Taylor, Zach Olson, and Morgan Haas won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.04.

“The meet was a good starting point to build on for the rest of the season,” Haas said.

Another win came from Haas in the 500 freestyle, finishing at 5:37.26. Kyle Reilly won the 200 breastroke in 2:32.84. In the 3-meter diving competition, Sam Kezar added a victory with 171 points.

“The majority of the team can improve on their times. We are looking to come out with a win against Buena Vista and see what our hard work can accomplish,” Haas said.
