The Vikings did Sunday what I have said they need to do all year long: win.
I know, this seems like advice that any schmoe could give them, but I don’t think anyone did. If they had already known that they should win then they wouldn’t have tried so hard to lose.
The logic goes like this: In the first game against the Bears, if they had wanted to win they wouldn’t have given up the game in the last thirty seconds. If they had wanted to win against the Bills they wouldn’t have given up the game in the fourth and then again twice in overtime. The Seahawks scored 167 points in three or four seconds. The Vikings have been trying to lose all season which is an odd choice if they really want a new stadium.
The defense has been getting slack once again this year which is too bad. They haven’t been all that terrible. Yeah they have given up some big plays, but they also have held strong when they really needed it. It’s hard to get any credit when the offense hands 21 points to every team they play.
Speaking of the offense, Dante Culpepper looked confident in his abilities for the first time in a long, long time Sunday.
I feel he has been coached right out of his way of playing in the last couple of years and has lost a bit of confidence. In his first year as a starter you could count on him to run at the first sign of danger. This wasn’t all bad, it kept the linebackers and safeties honest. Last year he tried so hard not to run he made bad decisions. And then on top of the bad decisions came the small mental mistakes that lead to fumbles and interceptions. Sunday against the Lions he made some great, aggressive runs and passes. His one interception was Derrick Alexander’s fault. Remember he is not a conventional quarterback and shouldn’t try to play like one.
Let’s not talk about Randy Moss. You try having someone hand you millions of dollars, a key to the city and then scrutinize your every move.
Some of my stupidest drunkest friends actually try and tell me he is an idiot. These guys pee on the sides of buildings, but he is dumb. Whatever. He is one heck of a football player. If you want to be mad at somebody focus that anger on Derrick
Alexander. He sucks. Watch him play some Sunday. The guy gives up. He won’t try for the ball, he won’t make moves, he won’t help the Vikes win the way he is playing right now. I say sit him and get Walsh in there, then at least there will be some sore defensive backs at the end of the game.
The Vikes have the talent to win out this year. They won’t. But let Mike Tice get a better fell for this whole head coach thing, and let the rest of the team stop making mental mistakes and then realize that the best advice they can get all season is this: Just Win.
