Women golfers end 6th at conference

The South Dakota State University women’s golf team played the final meet of the fall season last weekend, finishing in sixth place at the North Central Conference tournament. Gusty winds of 25-35 miles per hour and cool temps made for difficult playing conditions and high scores at the Ironwood Country Club in Omaha, Neb.

Men win first NCC golf title since 1960

The South Dakota State University men’s golf team finished the season strong, winning both the Northwest Regional title and the North Central Conference crown. In Kearney, Neb., Sept.30-Oct. 1, the Jacks finished three strokes ahead of Colorado Springs to win the regional competition, 849-852.

Lowery leads runners in Minnesota

Brad Lowery led the fourth-ranked SDSU Jackrabbit men’s cross country team to victory last weekend at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Invite. Lowery won the 10 kilometer race in 31:59. Kevin Doe followed closely in second with a time of 32:04. Greg Darbyshire and Matt Pearson claimed third and fourth places, respectively.

SA Senate votes down new grading proposal

After hearing a report on grading procedures earlier in the year, the Students’ Association Senate again visited grading policy at their Monday meeting, but made no recommendation. Senators failed to pass a resolution to support a change in the current grading system, by a vote of 16-9.

Open government, equality key for attorney general, Volesky says

With the general election drawing near, candidates for all offices, even those farther down on the November ballot, are making their views known. Attorney general candidate Ron Volesky said he feels that increased spending for prisons and law enforcement instead of law enforcement should stop.

Hobo Day a major political operation

The University Program Council made a major move for this year’s Hobo Day parade by allowing political candidates to participate as a part of the campus political organization’s float entry. The change in the rules was quite evident Saturday as most of the major statewide candidates were present in the annual parade and both major campus political organizations played a large role in energizing the large number of parade spectators.

Nelson brings experience to campaign

When Chris Nelson left SDSU in 1987 with an animal science degree, the South Dakota secretary of state’s office didn’t seem like the next natural step. After 15 years in various levels of that office, though, he is trying to move up another step to become the person in charge.

The SDSU football team suffered a crushing Hobo Day loss to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Saturday afternoon. Losing 21-13, the Jacks found themselves with a defense that kept making big plays and setting up the offense for points, only to see the offense fail to score.
