Jacks stomp NDSU

The SDSU football team upended North Dakota State by a score of 25-20 on Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings. The Jackrabbits dominated all aspects of the game, and were led by an unlikely hero, redshirt freshman Walter Dosh. Dosh relieved a banged-up backfield with SDSU’s first 100-yard rushing performance of the season.

Women runners shake UNO

The South Dakota State University women’s cross country team beat NCC rival University of Nebraska-Omaha 21 to 36 Friday at the Jackrabbit Invite. Sheena Dauer continued her winning ways, taking first in 18:05. She was followed by Erin Woolley (18:22) and Krystie Ratzlaff (18:53).

Jacks Fanaddicts!

“Warning: Loud and Crazy student fan section may be harmful to conference opponents!” This is the promise of SDSU’s resident school spirit promotions group, the Jacks Fanaddicts. In their second year, the Fannaddicts try to rally school spirit at Jackrabbit sporting events by offering prizes for attendance at home sporting events.

Soccer breaks losing streak, ends NCC play

The South Dakota State University women’s soccer team closed out the North Central Conference season with a 5-1 win over the Augustana Vikings. The match, held at Yankton Trail Park, marked the end of a six-game losing streak for the Jacks. “It was a great win for us,” Coach Lang Wedemeyer said.

Howling Halloween

As day turns into night on Oct. 31, the streets of Brookings will be running wild with the shrieks and howls of witches, devils, ghosts, ballerinas, football players and even Sponge Bob Square Pants. Halloween, a time of trick-or-treating, causing mischief, and getting a little scared, is not just for children anymore.

In history at SDSU

November 4, 1919 A Students’ Association committee began investigating possible sites for a skating rink during the past week. Five sites are under consideration. President Johnson said that he was in favor of the move on the part of the Students’ Association and considers the roofing of the rink, a practical idea.

Local lore says ghosts exist

Ghost stories are a staple of the Halloween season. Scary movies abound in this season of horror. People like to be scared. Luckily, there are many places here in the state of South Dakota where people can go to try to be scared, because according to local lore, they are haunted.

SDSU offers nursing degree in Rapid City

Questioning beliefs is a good thing to do

I recently asked one of my 100-level courses, “How many of you have accepted Jesus or some other god as your personal savior?” Then more tellingly, I asked, “How many of you will continue to believe as you do now regardless of any scientific evidence you will encounter in your future?” Both times, the show of hands was nearly unanimous.

Coming to study in the U.S.

Being 22 and not really knowing what you want to do in life is a funny situation to be in. English kids go to high school when they are 11 years old. Middle schools, like American junior high schools, are around. But in most schools, you start at 11 and you graduate when you are 16.
