Janklow praises education at annual conference
Governor and candidate for the House of Representatives Bill Janklow followed 16 years of tradition last Wednesday when he fielded questions from a group of nearly 40 journalism students and faculty at Yeager Hall. Journalism Professor Jack Getz introduced the governor, pointing out that the arrival of President George Bush in Sioux Falls that morning had not deterred him in his tradition of meeting with SDSU students each year of his 16 years as governor of South Dakota.
Athletic director answers questions on possible DI move
Student senators gathered in Rotunda A on April 23 for a question and answer session about SDSU’s possible move to Division I. Fred Oien, director of athletics, was present to give an update on the Division I study and answer students’ questions. He said that Carr Sports Associates, the company hired to research the feasibility of this move, has their report done.
UNO sweeps Jacks
The South Dakota State University baseball team now stands at 19-17 overall and 8-6 in the North Central Conference after being swept in a doubleheader against the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday. In the first game, the Jacks could only scratch out two hits against UNO hurler Kyle Funk, as the Jacks lost 4-0.
Looking Back
The South Dakota State University athletic teams should all be congratulated on a job well done this past year. While not every team or athlete met all of their aspirations, this year was one of the overall best in Jackrabbit athletic history. Here is a recap of all of the varsity sports teams: Volleyball 28-6 The Jackrabbit volleyball team finished the season second in the nation.
One Jackrabbit advances to regional tournament in Arizona, team does not
The selection committee handed the Jacks some good and some bad news this weekend. The Jacks did not qualify for regions as a team, but junior Brian Schultz advanced individually to the regional tournament this weekend in Goodyear, Ariz. The selection committee chooses which eight teams and additional individuals advance, based on fall and spring performances.
Greeks get credit where it’s due
Greek Week ended last Thursday April 25 with the annual Volstorff Walder Awards Ceremony presented by the SDSU Greek Council. Howard “Rocky” Gilbert, a founding Lambda Chi Alpha member and retired professor, was the keynote speaker for the evening. Gilbert told stories about how ever fraternity on this campus started.
SDSU shows its appreciation
SDSU Senior Appreciation Day was held on April 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Silvan Green as a way for the university to recognize seniors and give them an afternoon filled with food, fun and prizes. The event was sponsored by Staters for State and the SDSU Alumni Association with support from the Student Association as well.
Music Reviews
Alas, the year has come to an end. With pomp and circumstance, many of our fellow students shall step foot into the storied and frightening “real world” to fiercely battle the forces of ill will and debt. Lucky stiffs. The rest of us must find a job to pass the hours of another sweltering South Dakota summer that not only puts distance between us and the stressful end of the spring semester but also pays a paltry living stipend suitable to pay for our daily manna.

And then she looks into the camera with more moral certainty than you possess on most important issues and tell you “it’s a good thing.
Professors can’t fulfill calling without students
I had a great conversation with a dozen of my colleagues, representing many disciplines across campus, last Friday. I’d like to convey to you, dear readers, the gist of what we discussed. I suspect I speak for more professors than those 12. We made teaching our vocation for noble reasons: we wished to earn a living talking about ideas, we wished to work closely with other people, honing their intellectual skills, equipping them for success in their career as human beings, and we wished to instill in them a love of learning.
